Treblinka was one of three killing centers established by Operation Reinhard. It served the SS police authorities as a labor-education camp for non-Jewish Poles who were violated with labor discipline.

Treblinka II

In July of 1942, the authorities (SS and police authorities) in charge of Operation Reinhard completed the construction of Treblinka II. Treblinka II was intended for the use of extermination of Jews who were staying at Warsaw. It was mainly rain by Odilo Globocnik, who was the SS and police leader of the Lublin District.

The Treblinka labor camp and killing center was established during the German occupation of Poland during World War II. It was located in the Warsaw District of the General Government and was constructed around a gravel pit.

Being next to the railroad, Treblinka had the benefit of good rail connections between themselves and the cities of Warsaw and Lublin, where there were also major camps located.

The site of the killing center was heavily wooded and hidden from view. It covered an area equivalent to about 34 soccer fields. Surrounded by eight-foot-tall barbed wire fences and 26 feet tall watch towers at each of the four corners surrounding it.

Deportations to Treblinka came mainly from the ghettos of Warsaw and Radom Districts. By September 1942, the Germans had deported around 265,000 Jews to Treblinka.

When the time came for the murders, twenty cars at a time were detached from the train and brought into the killing center. The German authorities announced that they arrived at the transit camp and that they were required to hand over all valuables.

At The Camp

Men were separated from women and children and were all required to undress. A camouflaged, fenced in path led to the gas chamber and were forced to run along this path to the gas chambers in which they were deceived were showers.

Once the doors to the chambers were sealed, a diesel engine outside of the building pumped carbon monoxide inside and all those who were inside were killed.

Resistance At Treblinka

In 1943 a resistance group was organized and the leader decided it was time to revolt against the camps. Hundreds of prisoners made an attempt and stormed the main gate and most were killed by machine gun fire. However, 300 did escape, but they were tracked down by the German SS as well as the police authorities. Prisoners were forced to dismantle the camp and after they were done, they were shot and killed by the SS.

The End of Treblinka

German officials ordered that Treblinka II be dismantled in the fall of 1943. However, Treblinka I operated until late July 1944. Overall the camp personnel murdered an estimated 925,000 Jews at the Treblinka killing center. The Soviet Army troops ended up overrunning both of the sites leading to the end of the Treblinka camps.
