Allycia: "I started wearing makeup when I started highschool, I was 13 turning 14 years old. I started wearing it because when I started highschool, all the girls wore makeup. To be honest, I was very insecure with my skin at the time, I had really bad acne. I was just trying to fit in. Plus, my mom wore a ton of makeup for work all the time so that really encouraged me into getting into the habit of wearing makeup. For the first couple years I would only wear mascara and a bit of foundation. Now, I don't leave the house unless I am wearing a full face of makeup."

But back in the 80's, for at least the crowd I hung around, it was almost a sign of rebellion. Lots of parents were against it, especially for women. I had my ears lobes, forward helix and belly-button pierced. Your grandma was not happy with me. Then again, she never was with my apperance back then. She was too decourous. For plastic surgery, I feel likewomen who got it, were automatically judged for having it, even though those who were judging, were the ones who wanted to get it. Women couldn't do anything with their bodies and their apperance back then without being scrutinized for it; and they still are today!"

I'd hate to be a 21 year old in L.A.; the standards there are so high you wouldn't recognize yourself. I do feel the pressure though of having to look put together all the time. I mean, I love to do my makeup. But when I go out with a clean face, I feel so judged because people don't usually see me with dark circles, a red complexion and next to no eyebrows. I guess you could say I feel like someone is always judging. Someone is always noticing when we as women don't reach the standards of beauty; and it gets talked about. I love that there isn't too much pressure, but there shouldn't be any. People should look the way that they want to look. Period."

How did all the pressure of standards of beauty make you feel?

Sharon: "Back then, I guess you could say I didn't realize there was pressure at all. If there was a change in trends, we followed it. Lookign back though, for those who didn't follow the standards of beauty, they were definietly looked down upon. Girls got made fun of, and it for sure altered their confidence level. I've always told you from day one to be your own person. And I know that sounds super cheesy but it's true. You need to stand out in this world. Yeah, it's okay of course to do your makeup how Kim Kardashian is doing it, or wear a similar style to Khloe Kardashian...but you can't let that change who you are, it's very important. Don't lose yourself in following others. Many do, and it's sad."

Personal Analysis

I loved the opppurtunity to interview my mom and Allycia and gain such an insightful perception on their opinions regarding societial standards. It was one thing to read and reply to discussion post, but directing those questiosn to two people I interact with on a daily basis is definetly mind altering. I can see for sure that there are similarities and differences between their responses. One inference I can specifically draw from this interview is that no matter the standards that were in place then and now, it is apparant that women have developed a sense unaffiliation with standards. It's 2018 and women are not always adhering to the standards given by society. And it has become normalized to not have to look put together 24/7. Women having been making a breakthrough in the workplace for decades. I think when women go to college and decide that they're going to go to their 8 a.m. without any makeup and wear trackpants and a t-shirt, that they are in a sense making a statement, and that is: "I was up late doing work so I am going to advertise the fact that a) I don't care what people think of my apperance and b) I'm allowed to not have to look "good" all the time. I am not afraid to show that I mean business and can showcase my success in my program." From this, I mean that women are allowed to look tired and run down. We're expected to put in the work to be successful but in some cases it's taboo to show it. We do not always have to look our best. And for those who do always look their best, that's okay too. This class has really touched upon all subjects of standards in society and has really made me alter my opinion about what real beauty is and how emotionally deterring it can be to achieving the prescribed standard. Women should keep working to erase all stigmas attached to being a women. And we all need to be on the same side here too. No more comparison. No more thinking we aren't good enough. We are women and we are good enough. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Sharon: "Women have taken so many steps forward since I was your age. Look at your generation now. You are so luck to live a life where you don't always have to worry aout your apperance. I think it can only get better from here. Woemn just have to push and keep moving forward. Apperance is not everything."
