Yanek and his family live in krakow polands. but just in the blink of an eye, the Germans invaded their city at the beginning of WW2 for now, Yankek and and his family remain in Krakow. For a little while they stay in their flat with several other families. antisemitic ruses have been put in place that persecute Jewish people, taking away any rights they had. over time, walls are built up around the ghetto to contain the remaining Jews who have not been taken for the resettlement or deportation yet. One by one many Jews were relocated to other Jewish ghettos, work camps, and concentration camps or were killed on site

Yanek has lost everybody he knew, and he is just a kid. Yanek was at his lowest but he realized that he would die if he didn't do what he had to. uncle Moshe told him that he had to be emotionless and follow what all the nazis say to keep living on.

he traveled 1000km down into the salt mine to mine salt and work for the nazis and he had to travel with about 2 or 3 other men to dig alot of salt.

Yaneks figurative journey

first, as he started heading to the new concentration camp he felt a sort of fury towards the guards. As Yanek saw another man fight back against the guard and die then everyone started getting killed for his actions he felt fear. after he came to the realization that if he fights back he will get others killed he felt acceptance

Yanek's Literal journey Yanek got taken from Trzebinia and loaded up to in a train like human cattle and people so tight together the text stated.... "" I can't breath. I cant breathe!"" "A man at the other end of the car started to scream, giving voice to my panic." (pg.115) they were on the train for almost a day but Yanek got lucky and was by an air vent so he could breath unlike the mad right next to him that was a musselmen and died right next to him from suffocation and starvation. Yanek's Figurative journey Yanek gets taken to Birkenau and all the rumors from every one are there all "being taken to the gas chambers." So Yanek and everyone in the cattle like train is scared for their lives and Yanek feels like it's his first time that he's actually going to die. When they get in the chambers Yanek even starts going insane and the text states, "I thought crazily, and I started to giggle.Yes that was it." (pg.128) but then cold very cold water pours on him when he's waiting for the gas to come out sacredly and the biggest feeling of relieved he's still alive.

Yanek's Figurative Journey Against uncle Moshe's advice Yanek makes good friends with Fred which has conflict good, and bad where it was good because it made Yanek feel human again and he is able to talk to someone but bad, because Fred feels sick one day and don't get up for roll call and they proceed to beat him and Yanek till Yanek goes to roll call and Fred gets hung because he couldn't work. But Yanek had a good laugh when he entered Auschwitz and the SS officer told Yanek and everyone enters through the gate exits through the chimney. "You come in through the front gate, but the only way you leave in through the chimney, the guards had told us when we arrived. HA! Look at me now, I wanted to shout walking out through the front gate, the way I came in!" (pg.168) And when he's on the death march he thinks and reminds himself that he's going to survive and has a moment where he repeats everything he has survived.
