I am concerned about the plastic waste that is on earth right now. How can we solve this problem and make a change? Plastics are very hard to decompose. It can take more than 200 years to decompose. We need to save ourselves, our animals, and the earth itself. Earth is dying because of us. Animals are dying because of us. We are dying because of us. A negative environment can kill us. I think this is a good topic to talk about because a lot of people always use it and never think about their actions. We can work together as a team to solve this and act for a better future.

https://sites.google.com/sbr.sch.id/pypx-journal-elaineaz/home

The trash on the land can affect us because the trash in the land can make land pollution happen. Which will make water not safe to drink. Trash/plastics that are in the oceans can be eaten by the animals and make them die. This also can affect us by not having clean water in the ocean, no animals to eat (there are plastics and trash on the body), and many animals die/suffer.

Plastic waste is related to the UNSDG target "Life Below Water" (Goal 14) because of how it affects the wildlife in the ocean. For instance, they might consume plastic, believing it to be food, and suffer for getting the plastics out of their body. Not only the life below water but the water itself can be ruined by many plastics inside the water. Divers can't swim and people can't do snorkeling anymore.

The challenging part is when we all don't cooperate with each other and some are not doing the work or leaving the discussion. I overcome this problem by just letting them do what they want to do and getting input from the mentor on how to deal with that by just giving them work since they don't what to be in the discussion. I feel very excited to do the actions together and sometimes "dizzy" about what should we write more for the planning of the inquiry.

Learner Profile I Have Demonstrated:
The learner profiles that I have demonstrated are thinker because I think and research various information about plastics, communicator because I can communicate well with my group, inquirer because I show my curiosity and enjoyed every moment during the process of it, and lastly open-minded because I can consider many different of opinion and perspectives for our action later.

ATL I Have Demonstrated:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HpbEJ8dMfKxuOawWrScuS3mkY8G3BeCyyvd3ooURhpE/edit?usp=sharing

My Next Plan:
After I gain more knowledge, I will publish a website (an organization), create a campaign, and try to work with other organizations to make a change together. I want to find out peoples' opinions about plastics by interviewing them, what are the bad chemicals in plastics by doing an excursion to a plastic factory, knowing how can plastic affects the environment by visiting a water source that has a lot of plastic and finding out more about how can we work together to try to stop littering by creating a podcast with organizations.

Those plastics are easier to sort and melted into pallets that can be sold to the manufacturers. The other plastics, like 3 (V), 4 (LDPE), 5 (PP), and 6 (PS). That's The reason it is easily burned. The oil is brought to the factory, then boiled. The crude oil produces different types of oil. One of them is naphtha, naphtha is one of the main materials to make plastic. Ethen is the main substance to make plastic. Ethen is made from naphtha. To make ethene naphtha is sent to naphtha cracking center. After that the ethene is coiled , compressed and sent to the reaction chamber. In the reaction chamber the ethene is processed into polyethene. After that the polyethene is brought to a chamber that adds antioxidants and stabilizer to the polyethene. Then the polyethene is put in the extruder. The polyethene is turned into polyethene strings which are actually strings made out of plastic. The polyethylene string goes to the grinder and turns to plastic pellets.

Hardin, T. (2021, October 30). Plastic: It’s not all the same. Plastic Oceans International. https://plasticoceans.org/7-types-of-plastic/

One of the most popular plastics in use today, polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE), is divided into three categories. HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, is robust and resistant to chemicals and moisture. The most harmful plastic to human health is polyvinyl chloride (often known as vinyl or PVC), which is known to release harmful chemicals over the course of its entire existence. HDPE is a variant of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) that is softer, cleaner, and more flexible. It is frequently utilized in corrosion-resistant work surfaces, other items, and beverage carton liners. Among all plastics, polypropylene (PP) is one of the most resilient. Although it is slightly bendable due to its flexibility, it holds its strength and shape for a considerable amount of time. Hazardous poisons like styrene can easily leak from polystyrene (PS or Styrofoam). Plastics that don't fit into any of the other six categories are grouped under the category "other." The fact that these polymers are often not recyclable is what matters most in this situation. It's crucial to understand what it implies because you might encounter the #7 recycle code, therefore we included it.

Chemicals/Substances of Biodegradable Plastics

What does biodegradable plastic degrade into? (2020, April 23). Retrieved from https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/what-does-biodegradable-plastic-degrade-into/

Biodegradable plastics contain chemical additives that encourage microorganisms to feed on the plastic, using their enzymes to break the plastic’s molecular bonds. These additives work in two main ways: either by attracting microbes to the plastic directly, or by speeding up the plastic’s natural weathering process, which gives a larger, more ragged surface area for the microbes to work on.

Once the microbes have done their work, all that’s left behind is water, carbon dioxide, and methane. The reality is, however, a little more complex, as many biodegradable plastics need particular conditions in order to biodegrade. This typically involves temperatures of over 50°C and the right combination of moisture, air and microbes – meaning that these plastics won’t break down if left in the ocean or on domestic compost heaps.

Meanwhile, some plastics labelled as biodegradable aren’t truly biodegradable but are merely designed to disintegrate into fragments when exposed to air. These plastics never decompose entirely, but leave behind tiny pieces known as microplastics.

Now, in week 4, it's starting to be fun (we get to do the actions and discuss as a team to try on stopping plastics usage. There are also some challenges that we need to face. Such as, having a lot of work at the same time with exhibitions, and other lessons too. I overcome the challenges by making a to-do list and a timetable to know what to do next (time management). I have mixed emotions and feelings throughout this exhibition process because at a point I felt excited and happy.

From that online workshop with Kertabumi, we have learned that there are many plastic problems on the earth and that we should start taking action. The problem we learned there that can affect the environment is that there is much trash in the ocean which could affect divers' swimming and could trap sea animals. many ways to reuse plastics. Such as reusing plastic packaging and creating it as a tote bag so we could reuse it multiple times. Melting plastics to create a bowl, or even reusing used paper. We also can use used cardboard and plastic caps to create cars, pencil holders from used plastic bottles, kites from plastic bags, and more. Not only reuse them, but we could also use eco-friendly products. Such as eco-friendly soap from honey or chocolate. An action that we all can start now is bringing water bottles/tumblers to school, finishing our food, and sorting out plastics (organic, non-organic, paper, and residue). We also learned that we could go to a garbage bank to trade our plastics so we could get money. We are very grateful to join this online workshop with Kertabumi.

My Growing Thinking:
I used to think that working together is easy but now I think that there will always be challenges that we will face but we have to always be patient.

The Fun & Challenging Part:
I have enjoyed working with my group together and getting more information and ideas from our seniors from Sekolah Bogor Raya's Bye-Bye Plastic Bags SLC club. There will always be parts that are challenging. The challenges that I face this week are facing my friends when they don't do their assignments when I need to do their part since the due is near. I could face those problems by creating a to-do list to keep on track of my assignments and I need to push my friends to do their assignments and always try to be calm when facing these challenges. I felt excited since it was almost the day of the PYP Exhibition but a little bit sad because I will miss this PYP Exhibition journey together with Ibu Tari (our mentor) and my group. But at the same time I, felt exhausted because I need to have good time management skills since it was almost the end of the PYP Exhibition journey. At the same time, I also felt stressed since I need to deal with the assignments that are "empty-handed" to me and also I need to face the different characteristics of my friends on giving the assignments (when they don't want to do it, etc).

Learner Profile I Have Demonstrated:
I have demonstrated many learner profiles such as inquirer (when being engaged in doing the experiments and the actions), thinker (on using many research methods), communicator (on discussing ideas with my group and mentor), risk-taker (on presenting to Sekolah Bogor Raya's kindergarten), balanced (on being enthusiastic during the action and when doing experiments), and open-minded (on considering many ideas about what to do at the d-day of the PYP Exhibition and our action).

ATL I Have Demonstrated:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HpbEJ8dMfKxuOawWrScuS3mkY8G3BeCyyvd3ooURhpE/edit?usp=sharing

Takeaways for the Whole Exhibition Journey:
I see this PYP Exhibition as a new opportunity to express myself and build friendships when working together. This exhibition journey is also a way to make a change. This PYP Exhibition has changed me by making me try to be a person that is more patient when facing many challenges and building me to be a better listener, and a better leader, building me to be cooperative and better when working together.

We did a brainstorming about our organization together. We discuss about the vision and mission, activities and programs, organization structure, and the job desc or the roles. By doing this, we get to work together as a team to create an organization so we could reduce plastic waste. Creating an organization is not easy. We need to discuss the vision and mission and we need to think carefully so that our decision is correct and perfect and matches our topic. Our vision is to create personal awareness among children to protect and preserve the environment. Our mission is to raise awarness about sorting out trash properly, to raise awareness about the effect of plastic trash towards the environment, and to give guidance and assistance to children to practice and have a better environment to care lifestyle.

Sorting-Out Trash at Our House

We sorted out the trash at our house. We put 3 boxes and labeled them plastic, paper, and organic. On the plastic box, we put our plastic waste in our daily life. When we observed it, we found out that we used plastics a lot, mostly plastic bottles and plastic bags. We also used a lot of paper! From writing, drawing, calendars, and more. Organic doesn't always have to be from organic food waste (fruits, vegetables, etc) because it might be smelly if we put it too long inside the dropbox. By doing this, we could recycle it by sorting it out because how could we recycle it if we don't know the types of trash? The first and easiest step to recycling trash is to sort it out.

We tried creating beeswax wraps from organic beeswax pallets and 100% cotton fabric. The first step is to melt the beeswax pallets by using a pan and a stove. Second, we need to apply the melted beeswax to the 100% cotton fabric. Lastly, let it dry and the beeswax wraps is done! We created this product (beeswax wraps) to be the new saran wraps. It can be reused multiple times. Using this beeswax wrap is really easy. We can use beeswax wraps to wrap foods, etc.
