David Xavier Harrigan, also Tomata du Plenty was born in May 28th, 1948 but his story with The Screamers begins in 1975. When Tomata du Plenty first collaborated with Tommy Gear, they created the band the Tupperwares but it was later changed to the Screamers after legal action from Tupperware companies.

CBGB music club opens doors to punk music

CBGB was founded in 1973 at 315 Bowery, a former nineteenth-century saloon on the first floor of the Palace Lodging House. The legendary music venue fostered punk and art rock, which defined the culture of downtown Manhattan in the 1970s.

Originally called 'The Tupperware', the lineup included Tommy Gear (at the time, using the name "Melba Toast"), Tomata du Plenty, and Rio de Janeiro on vocals.

1971 - The New York Dolls

Music critics commented about Tomata du Plenty as "Tomata's hair was greased to stand straight up, giving him the look of a man who had just stuck his finger into an electric socket…”

The screamers hit the magazines even before they made any of their live tracks from how unique they were in perspective to other artists of the time. 1977 through 1979 was the peak of the Screamers where they sold out almost every show.

Tomata's art

He began his art career in 1983, premiering a one man watercolor exhibit at the zero one gallery in Hollywood.

In 1987, he one LA weekly's best set design for his work on a one man show starring John Fleck called "I got the He-bees, She-bees'

In 1988, He presented an exhibit at Zero One Gallery entitled 'knock-out!' That pictured boxers. (Example pictured above)

Though it's hard to search out an exact date, later in his life he did a mural on the side of the Hamlet bar which is why we choose him for our graffiti piece because he was not just a music artist, but an influential figure in both the worlds of graffiti and music.

Our graffiti piece is inspired by the spiky graffiti of punk rock culture. (Pictured above) The letters in the middle of the design are an 'N' and an 'R' representing the last initial of each of our last names, the electric guitar at the end a nod to the Screamers, which our artist Tomata Du Plenty was lead vocals of. Tomata's name is cursive at the bottom.
