         <title>Topic 1: What is Science and how it works?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Before NS 100 I was nervous about this course because I have always struggled in science. I am learning more each week and in terms that I can understand. I thought it was just investigating things that I do not really understand.&nbsp;<br><br>-NS 100 is helping me to understand that science is important in everyday life and understanding how it works is important, as well. Science in America is important because the generation coming up has to carry this over to keep finding things we have not yet found. In the article "Why Science" it talks about how science happens when people get together to collaborate and work together. Scientists have to be able to trust themselves and the others to make things happen. Reading the sources and watching the videos is helping me to understand better about science and why we need it in schools.&nbsp;<br><br>-I will carry this information with me as I stay on the track to become a teacher. I will teach that science is used everyday and we have to be able to work together to make things happen. Science is not just about investigating things I do not understand, but about the world around us and working together. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Topic 2: How the scientific method relates to scientific inquiry and how inquiry-based learning impacts student learning</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Before NS 100 I had never thought about scientific inquiry relates to the scientific method. To be honest I had forgotten the steps in the scientific method because it had been so long since I had to look at it.&nbsp;<br><br>-Through reading the article "What is Inquiry Based Learning?" I learned that it is important to challenge the kids thinking and encouraging them to use evidence- based reasoning an problem solving to come up with a solution. Learning about the benefits of inquiry based learning surprised me about how much the kids benefit from it. Working in groups and building an experiment and using the scientific method to complete it and share it with the class helps the students to think outside the box, research, and use their findings to come up with a solution. It encourages an inclusive environment in the classroom, as well.&nbsp;<br><br>-In the future, I plan to use this information I have learned and make an impact on my students now and in the future. I plan to use inquiry based learning to help my students use their problem solving skills to come up with solutions, to explore the world around them in fun ways, and to use evidence based learning to come up with conclusions. I want science to be fun like this class is to me so far! </div>]]></description>

         <title>Topic 3: The characteristics of life and what it means to be alive</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-I had never really thought about all the characteristics of something that is alive, I just thought of humans as being alive if they are breathing. I had never thought about what it means to be alive.<br><br>-Through the learning resources I learned that being alive is much more than breathing. In the video "Life On Earth" I learned that all living things take in energy from outside to maintain themselves and I found that really neat. I enjoyed hearing about all the characteristics that make up a living thing on Earth.&nbsp;<br><br>-To continue to grow in this topic I will seek out some more resources on what it means to be alive. I will teach these characteristics in my class if needed depending on the grade level. I really enjoy the video and seeing a visual. I can always refer back to these sources for guidance. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Topic 4: How microscopic changes have macroscopic effects</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-I knew through DNA and living environment things could change on animals and living things, but I didn't realize how over time it has changed so much and still is. I was not aware how much of and impact the microscopic changes have on living things.<br><br>-After participating in the bunny lab simulator, I realized that due to the changes in their environment it may cause them to all eventually end up the same. For example, if they all had tough food around then the bunnies ended up all long teeth and easier to eat the tough food. Also in reading through the slide deck of "recent adaptations in humans" I found the one about being lactose intolerant interesting because all babies have an active lactose gene but after being weened the gene is turned off. I never knew about that I always wondered how people became lactose intolerant.&nbsp;<br><br>-In the future I can research more about this topic. Find things about genetic mutations and how they happen. Working mostly with kids with disorders such as Autism and Down Syndrome I find these things very interesting. I can put my knowledge to use when working with some kids who have a disorder. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Topic 5: How your scientific perspective has changed since the beginning of the semester </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Before digging into this class, I thought science was super hard. I have always struggled with it. I generally did not like it, at all. I thought it was all above my thinking skills and over my head in academics.&nbsp;<br><br>-I have found the resources helpful in gaining an understanding about science, the scientific method, scientific inquiry, and why microscopic changes have and effect on lives. From things as small as why some people perceive certain foods to taste bitter to sickle cell anemia.&nbsp;<br><br>-Going forward outside of this class I can now say that science is not all that "bad". I can gain a better understanding of things by looking back on the resources and carry the information with me to school to better someone else who is struggling with science, as well. I enjoyed the lab simulator it helped to give me a visual about how things happen in the real world. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Topic 6: How your experiences with NS 100 relate to your apprenticeship in the classroom</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Before NS100 I did not think about inquiry-based learning on a day to day basis with my kids in the classroom. I never thought about how much there is to teach them right here in the world around them.&nbsp;<br><br>-After exploring the 4 different types of inquiry based learning I now have a better understanding of ways to help students analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information. It is not just in learning about science but also problem solving later in life.&nbsp;It does not have to be a huge science project to teach them the method and inquiry. It can be something small and fun outside in groups. <br><br>-I can use the information to put the kids little minds to work that I am with now. I can observe how other science teachers use the scientific method and inquiry and have a better understanding of what they are doing in the classroom now. </div>]]></description>
