CPSF is a free service that supports parents/carers of children aged 8-17 across Caerphilly. We are a preventative service that remains focused on addressing need and preventing escalation. We hope to support families to build resilience whilst learning new skills and strategies on their parenting journey. We also aim to enhance children's health, wellbeing and development.

We offer parents/carers a range of support programmes which they can engage in via a number of methods including;

One to one support (face to face, telephone, whatsapp, text )
Group support (face to face or online)
Padlet

I am supporting a family where English is not their first language, are you still able to provide support?

If English is not the families first language but they would like to receive support in an alternative language we will happily do this...

We can provide parents/carers with 1-1 support with the support of a translator and many of the resources that we provide alongside our support can be provided in a variety of languages.

A parent I am supporting would like to access a group to meet with other parents/carers however they have a physical disability which requires the use of a wheelchair, will they still be able to attend a group?

Absolutely!!

We make sure that any venue we use for our groups are accessible for all our parents and carers including wheelchair access/facilities. If parents/carers have a physical disability and there are adjustments that we can make we ask them to let us know.

A group is a great way to meet other parents and carers however if getting to a venue for a group is difficult we can provide parents/carers with access to one of our online groups.

We can also provide support via one of our online programme Padlets.

I am supporting a parent with a hearing disability are you still able to offer them support?

Absolutely!!

If a parent/carer has a hearing disability we can offer them support in a variety of ways;

* If they would like to receive 1-1 support we can arrange for a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter to be part of the support sessions.

* We can also provide support via text or emails rather than telephone.

We ask that parents/carers with hearing difficulties let us know how they would like us to offer them support.

I am supporting a family who are practicing Muslim, are you able to provide support around their religious commitments?

Absolutely!!

We recognise that there are duties that practicing Muslims carry out and that there are several important festivals in Islam that are celebrated around the world.

We will ensure that the support that we offer to parents/carers is available around their religious commitments including prayer and religious festivals.

I am supporting a 'Single Dad' who needs support with managing his children's behaviour are you able to help?

Absolutely!!

We can offer support to dads in a variety of ways including 1-1 support, access to our online programmes or groups.

Sometimes it can just be nice for dad's to be given the chance to spend time with other dad's who are in a similar position. If the dad that you are supporting would be interested in meeting with other dad's please let us know :)

I am supporting a Grandparent who supports with looking after their grandchild(ren) are you able to offer them support?

Absolutely!!

We recognise that grandparents you can be a huge support to parents/carers. Whether it is supporting with childcare or helping to reinforce discipline strategies.

However sometimes it can be tough for grandparents as they may have differing parenting strategies and find themselves going against the parents' wishes which can cause confusion for the child(ren). We can offer grandparents support so that the whole family is 'on the same page'.

We can provide support to grandparents in a variety of ways, 1-1 support, access to one of our groups or via one of our Padlets.

I am supporting a same-sex couple who have requested support with their child, are you able to provide this support?

Professionals referral

If you are supporting a family that would benefit from support you will need to complete a JAFF referral form clearly detailing the needs of the family.

The service is consent-based so please ensure that consent has been received from parents prior to submitting the referral.

Professional referrals

· All referrals to be completed on a JAFF and emailed to the Information, Advice and Assistance (IAA) Team at:- contactandreferral@caerphilly.gov.uk

Please contact the JAFF Coordinator prior to completing a JAFF to ensure multiple copies of the document aren’t created. The JAFF is designed to follow a family’s journey therefore there should only be one ‘rolling’ document.

When we receive your referral

All referrals are screened by Fiona our team manager, we may contact you to discuss the family in further detail at this point to ensure that we are the most appropriate service to provide support to the family.

You will receive an email to confirm that the referral that you have submitted has been accepted by the service. You will also be provided with a timescale for when we aim to make initial contact with the family.

We aim to make contact with parents/carers from the details provided in the referral form within 2-3 weeks however this will varying depending upon the team's capacity at the time of the referral.

If we do not have a contact number for the family we will write to them to ask them to contact us.

Family Links Nurture Programme

Family Links Nurture Programme (Additional Needs)

This programme is for families with a child/young person who is going through the diagnosis process for a disability.

This programme is interactive and fun! Its aim is to develop parents/carers emotional and mental wellbeing which is crucial in family life. It can be difficult to understand and manage difficult feelings and challenging behaviour particularly with a child who is going through the diagnosis process.

Non Violent Resistance (NVR)

The programme provides support to parents/carers that are seeing children display violent or aggressive behaviours. This course runs infrequently in comparison to all our other courses. Many of the courses above will support parents/carers to gain strategies to support challenging behaviour however if you feel the NVR course is suited to the family you are supporting please discuss this with us.

Family Links 'Talking Teens'

The programme aims to help parents/carers make sense of the teenage years and provide strategies to make their relationship with their teenager much more enjoyable. The Talking Teens programme encourages an approach to relationships that supports teenagers to develop good emotional and mental health – encouraging habits that will help them flourish and thrive throughout the rest of their lives.

We also provide a Talking Teens (adapted) programme for parents/carers of teenagers who have an additional need such as ASD, ADHD (pre and post-diagnosis). We offer this programme via 1-1 support sessions or via a group.

Understanding your child (Solihull Approach)

The programme aims to focus on the parent-child relationships by promoting a reflective style for life long learning. Whilst reducing challenging behaviour in children.

We currently offer this programme to parents/carers via 1-1 support or via access to an online programme.

Circle of Security Parenting (COSP)

The Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) programme provides a map for parents/carers developed out of 50+ years of attachment research. What makes Circle of Security Parenting different is that the information is presented in a way that gives parents/carers a clear map of their child’s needs. But how they use the map is up to each individual.

COSP is not a list of techniques but it is a map with a mirror, that requires parents/carers to reflect on their own self taking note of their own childhood experiences. Circle of Security Parenting encourages parents/carers to reflect in order to move beyond being reactive parents/carers.

The team create supportive, empowering relationships with parents/carers ensuring that risk factors are identified and addressed to keep children safe at all times.

The service works in partnership with parents/carers to help them to develop self-confidence in their parenting role as well as helping them to relate positively to their child/children.

1) Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS)

The service asks all parents/carers to complete a WEMWBS at the beginning and end of their engagement with the service. This is a scaling questionnaire which gives us an understanding of their wellbeing at that moment in time.

2) Family Star

To help us to understand the needs of the whole family and think about how we can best support parents/carers we complete a Family Star Form and explore the following topics:

- Physical health
- Emotional wellbeing
- Keeping children safe
- Social networks
- Boundaries & behaviour
- Family routine

We utilise this discussion to identify what parents/carers want to include in their families action plan providing suggestions if they are unsure.

Group Support

We would always encourage attendance at a group programme as this will give parents/carers the opportunity to meet others who are going through similar life experiences.

The service offers a variety of group-based programmes on a rolling basis to reflect the varying needs of families referred to the service. To find out more about the next groups that the service are running please contact us.

Groups are delivered online via Zoom or face-face within community venues across Caerphilly.

Individual Support

The service recognises that group support is not suitable for all parents/carers and therefore offers support on an individual basis (where the family are not receiving support from a social worker). The length of this intervention is determined by the needs of the family but is reviewed regularly to ensure that support is meeting the identified needs.

Parents/carers can access individual support in a variety of ways including;

Face-Face support (Home visits or within the community)
Telephone support
SMS
What's app calls/messages
Zoom video calls

CPSF works in partnership and provides complimentary support on the continuum from Early Years. Where a family have children of multiple ages we make considerations with the Early Years team as to which is the most appropriate service to support the family.

As the referrer you will be advised which service will be supporting the family.

Can families receiving support from Social Services access support from CPSF?

The service can provide support to parents/carers where the family are receiving support from Social Services however this support can only be accessed via group or Padlet.

If the family is closed to Social Services or 'stepped-down' to Supporting Family Change (SFC) the service is then able to offer individual support.

The attached referral and case guidance document details the support that can be provided to families at each stage of their involvement with Social Services. However, if you would like to discuss the needs of a particular family please contact Fiona Fry (CPSF team manager)

The family that I am supporting have children under 7 years can you still help?...

If the family that you are supporting require support with a child/children aged 0-7 then the Early Years team can support the family from pregnancy. The Early Years team work closely with midwives, health visitors, school nurses, schools, childcare and all the early years practitioners who can support a whole range of provision online, or in person, depending on what you and your family need.

Can CPSF support parents/carers when their child is going through the diagnosis process?

The service recognises that going through the diagnosis process with your child can be challenging for parents.

The service provides support to families going through the diagnosis process and works alongside specialist services such as CASS post-diagnosis.

The service offers parents/carers access to the Parent Nurture Disability Programme via individual support, group or Padlet.

Can I re-refer a family for support if they have not engaged previously?

Things change all of the time and there are different challenges that arise for families at different points in their lives.

We welcome a re-referral for a family to access further support; whether the need for the family has changed or the time is better for them.
