Jay Gatsby is known by almost everyone as the very wealthy, enthusiastic man that throws parties every week. However little is actually known about the man. He seems to be friends with almost everyone he and Nick encounters. However he tells that his entire family has died and he is the last remaining, As of now it is not stated of what he did for his upbringing. The stories he tells are extravagant as if he is trying to keep up a certain persona and sometimes sound like straight lies and when asked for more details he gives a quickly made up answer to dodge.

A story that Jay tells Nick with some plot holes goes as follows" ‘I am the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west—all dead now. I was
brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all
my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is
a family tradition.’...‘What part of the middle-west?’ I inquired casually.
‘San Francisco.’" First off it seems as though he is trying to hide something about how he got his fortune by saying "all dead now" as if to make people not try to dig deeper into his family relations, which then goes to Nick asking what part of the mid-west he is from and he quickly replies without much thought and says "San Francisco" which is not in the middle-west at all. He does seem to reveal a little bit about himself though through his action of being interested in Daisy of which he knew before he went to war. He seems to show interest in her through the act of buying a house right across the bay from where Daisy lives in an attempt to be closer to her and for her to see all the parties he throws every week to perhaps try to lure her into his home so they can meet again after 5 years. In the beginning of chapter 3 Gatsby is primarily at his giant mansion that is right across the bay from where Tom and Daisy live.
