Who to play basketball with and the venue to play basketball are the independent variables, and the boy's happiness is the dependent variable.
I will create a scale of 1-10 to measure the boy's happiness. 1 will be the lowest, meaning the boy is unhappy, and 10 will be the highest, meaning the boy is very happy.
Happiness is hard to measure, so to make it easier, I will observe two things to measure boys' happiness.
1. their behavior
2. their brain chemicals
The amount of excitement and euphoria boys experience in playing basketball, and the level of "happy chemicals" boys produce in their brains. By specifying what I will be observing, it makes the measurement and recording clearer. If I only observed the number of times he was excited and his brain chemistry to measure their happiness, then the reliability and validity of my data would be at risk because boys cannot be happy all the time during basketball and may also develop frustration and anger.
