Element 6 is identifying critical information. It is important to let students know when you are teaching new and imperative concepts and skills in your classroom. Students need to be aware when it is happening and have time to process it. Teachers do not always have to announce it to the class. They can use technology or other tools to make students aware of critical information.

Strategies for Element 6

There are three strategies for Element 6.

1. Identifying Critical-Input Experiences: there should only be "two to three" of these for each learning goal.

2. Visual Activities: if the teacher tells students about the critical information and they can see it visually, they are more likely to remember it.

3. Pause Time: it is important to give students a chance to process and reflect on something new before you move on.

How Technology can Enhance each Strategy

1. Identifying Critical-Input Experiences: A simple PowerPoint with enhancements could be used. The critical word or phrase could be highlighted in a certain color and a sound could be used when it appears on the screen. Also, having the information appear on a click is important so students do not see too much at one time.

2. Visual Activities: After you talk about an important concept, show the students a You Tube video about it as well.

3. Pause Time: You could have students write on a Padlet like this to reflect about what they learned about the new concept. The teacher sets up the Padlet and shares the link for students to add to it.

1. Identifying Critical-Input Experiences: Create a routine to let students know this is happening. Also, you can use the Four Point Scale for Student Self-Assessment to let the students decide how much they understand the new material.

2. Visual Activities: If you choose a color to use to highlight a key word, always use the same color to keep it consistent. Also, if using a PowerPoint, hide part of the slide to let students only look at what you are talking about at that moment.

3. Pause Time: Give students ten seconds to process something before you move on to something new.
