Hear when they are having issues; empathize with them; hear what they are actually saying without the "fixing" hat on, but rather just the "person" hat. Then, ask them what they want from you as a leader in that moment: advice, ideas, strategies, help from administration or dep. head? I have spent a lot of time and effort to become good at the pedagogy of teaching. We have an overall good "vibe" between teachers and a positive community. However, PLCs don't always learn together. They aren't moving forward in common directions. I need to start by helping my own PLC to do this better so we can share with others what is working for us.

I believe that the way we treat people will make the biggest difference in how open they are to learn. If we value them as human beings with unique experiences and perspectives, they will be more open to see us in the same way. This connection will allow us to be courageous and to share our experiences and perspectives with them and seek to grow together. This might be one of the most important things in leadership - loving others.

Silo teachers whose main collaborative teams, while incredibly supportive and effective, aren't in the building. As one of them, I often feel torn back and forth, and my department at the school is not as unified or collaborative, making it hard to prioritize.

Literacy and behavior are challenges. I feel like a lot of the behavior issues stem from an apathetic view of education. Many students don't understand WHY they are in school and that it is not just about knowing things they can easily Google. The power of a PLC book club can go farther than I think most of us realize, myself included! But, there is something amazing about coming together as a trusted group of professionals, selecting a common challenge and area of growth, learning about it together, strategizing how to use in the classroom, and coming together again to discuss success/failure of attempts at implementation with the intent to continue to improve and grow as a team. These learning-centered practices had some of the largest impact on student learning last year.

Always having something to spread. Knowing what they're excited about learning and doing in their class and talking about it with their colleagues, during both formal and informal conversations.

My favorite form of impactful leadership is quiet one-on-one interactions with others. I love seeing the thrill in a student's eyes when they discover their own capacity. And, the outcome is amplified when their peers notice and see that strength in their classmate.
