I think positionality is a complex idea, that you have many experiences and come from a particular combination of influences that predisposes you to think about the world, to hear and see the world a certain way. It also has a negative context, as if you're biased to only see and hear things a certain way. While I think that people do fall into certain patterns and routines and ideologies of interacting with the world, I also think that you can try to stay open-minded. I think, as a teacher, you have to stay as open-minded as possible, because if you don't, it doesn't work. I'm not sure if this addresses the question, but those are my thoughts.
Tom Greenland

As a white male, growing up in Orange County, I had much to learn about the way other people think. My positionality led me to think everyone had the same worldview. I now make it a point to understand everyone's background and to never assume students have the same viewpoint as myself or their peers.

I am a white, jewish, cis female, who grew up in Long Island, daughter of a teacher and ems captain. We bring our own bias and personal experiences into the school, which is something that we all deal with. It can be hard to have certain expectations of our students, to see what they could do, but also need to understand that there are many different limitations that our students have.
