Sirens, in Greek and Roman myths, were half-women and half-bird. "Their enchanting song was said to lure sailors to their deaths in dangerous waters." There were many theories of who the sirens were including that they were the daughters of Achelous, a river god or that they are the daughters of Oceanus and Gaea. There was a story that the sirens got their wings after being sent by Demeter to save Persephone when she was trapped in the Underworld.

Sirens, with their sweet voices, would occasionally lure sailors to the sea. Greeks would use this as a way to symbolize the dangers that were lurking in the sea. Another example would be that the sirens in The Odyssey would represent the dangers of temptation. They would also use the siren's songs as way to warn people to resist the temptation of the past and listen to the voice guiding them forward.

At sea, Odysseus and his men steer between Italy and Sicily going through dangerous waters, home to the mythical winged creatures, the siren. Told by the warning of Circe, these goddesses, who are winged monster women, once held Odysseus captive. The goal of these sirens is to lure sailors in, seducing them off their course to their death. Their songs are hypnotizing leading the naive men to collide into rocks and land.
