Students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty in their communication skills, behavior, and social interaction. Lacking these skills creates an obstacle to learning how to read and write. This can be a challenge because without having the target skills of language, you cannot teach reading.

Many children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder commonly have what is called hyperlexia. Hyperlexia is the ability to have strong word recognition and fluent readers. However, they have poor comprehension skills and or know the meaning of the words shown. 

• Students with ASD have difficulty comprehending a passage that was read or the student orally read. These students lack the understanding of words which is why it is important for the students to know the word, understand the modern meaning, labeling emotions etc.
