Learning Outcomes: How has this course supported these outcomes?

The outcomes for this course have been supported well during the first half of the course. Learning about the Threshold Concepts has been enlightening and supporting. Some of the most interesting threshold points are "Writing expresses and Shares Meaning to Be Reconstructed by the Reader," "All Writing is Multimodal," "Writing Is Linked to Identity," "Failure Can Be an Important Part of Writing Development," and "Metacognition is not Cognition." The threshold concepts are making us reflect on what we do and why we do it as well as giving us new perspectives on approaches we might try.

What contributions by your classmates or instructor have been particularly useful, remarkable or otherwise noteworthy?

Discussion interactions this semester have been so helpful. We have all bounced around ideas and formats for presenting our work. I particularly enjoyed all of the multimodal choices that were presented: Popplet, Voice Thread, Milanote, Canva, Bubbleup, PowToon, Prezi, PowerPoint, lino, and Padlet. I only wish I had more time in the day to play with these and learn to use them well. Methinks I’ve spread myself too thin—too much to do and so little time. At least I love everything I am doing!

All of your ideas and contributions have been so engaging. I particularly enjoyed Kristyn’s multimedia posts and have learned that listening to and/or reading the information in them has been very informative. Myia’s Padlet for Concept 5 was also well thought out and inviting to read. The use of Crystal’s visual of Professor Snape from Harry Potter made me smile as did Kristyn’s visual of Dori from Finding Nemo. The Voice Threads were also wonderful! Listening to everyone, even if there was no visual attached, was even more meaningful to me because I love listening to audio books and talk radio. I am more attentive when I listen, so thank you for that, everyone!

What kinds of connections have you been making about your own teaching learning and writing practices?

What I am finding is that my students are coming to me with preconceived notions about what FYC is based on what they are learning in high school, and it throws them a little to see that some of the approaches I am now using are different from what they expected. Not only is the course content different from what they expected, my availability to them is much more than they expected. With regard to my own writing, I believe I am beginning to really enjoy the idea of working on more multimodal

What has baffled or surprised or disturbed you?

I was surprised and disturbed that many of the articles were exactly pin-pointing the practices I was using in my composition courses with regularity, which tells me they must be common practices. For example, the “one-shot librarian visit that Stinnet and Rapchak talk about (p.62+) were regularly scheduled into my course calendar. My peer editing and revision practices were not up to par. Although I used to conference, I was not available as much as I am now. I am baffled that I have changed many of these practices just by having a computer lab available to me. I can spend more time conferencing and teaching new multimodal techniques with students. The librarian comes in more often to work with the class on specific projects. I still need to work on doing more reflecting with students. That is my current goal

Questions:
1. How can we use the Threshold Concepts to teach our students to be able to write academic papers for other instructors who expect traditional formats?
2. What new directions will we find in the near future? There are so many new ways to communicate, and there will obviously be more as time goes on. What is next?
3. Is taking classes supposed to be this much fun?
