The more autonomous the learner the less dialogue he/she needs. The less independent the learner the more synchronous learning the student needs. 
Elementary = Primarily synchronously with some elements of asynchronous
Middle school - most synchronous will be thorough discussion based assessments and checking in with teacher.
High School - Predominantly ASynchronous
