As I researched and emulated this artist, I noticed some aspects were easier than others; Like him, I am drawn to contrasting shapes/subjects, often featuring harsh light. Alternatively, I had to push myself to remember to find new angles, especially tilting my camera angle out of my default geometric framing.

I've always had a deep love for street/candid photography, enamored by the intimate moment that a (typically) candid photo creates. It is a special thing to capture the scene of someone interacting with the world, and I find that it varies greatly from a subject posing for a camera.

This project of cumulative photoshoots taught me how to navigate my style in the context of inspiration. I initially found myself impressed by Moriyama's eye for making the mundane appear compelling through his photography, which I took with me throughout the process. Emulating an artist whose work is mostly monochrome photography was slightly out of my usual comfort zone, but I felt it complimented my style quite successfully. I created and curated my collection with my inspirations coming mostly from Moriyama's stark use of stark contrast, light, and shadow. Using this much contrast felt unnatural to me at first, but the way that this collection turned out prompted me to reflect on how I incorporate other styles into my work. On top of identifying motifs and subjects/items that resonated with me, I paid attention to lines, shapes, subject positioning, time of day, and textures to make a similar impression that my chosen artist had on me.

I feel that I could've done more to push my boundaries, but in the end, I feel confident having new ways to emulate inspirations through my art.
