In our thematic approach "Where in the World?" we have been looking at Sea Creatures 🐬🐋🪼🐠🪸🦀 Dan the Diver, was helping us to learn all about the different types of sea creatures. We talked about which sea creatures is our favourite, and why.

We love to read stories in Willow Class but this week we have been looking at non-fiction books. They have been helping us to find out lots of information about different sea creatures 📚 📖🐬🐋🪼🐠📖

The children are working so hard on their independent writing. We are writing 3 to 4 word sentences, using our phonics knowledge to help us. For example: a big red bus. It is a dog.

In Maths, we are continuing to consolidate our number bonds to 10. We have also been looking at number 10 and playing games like "10 or not 10?"

We have been preparing for our Sports Day Afternoon by playing the games, and having lots of fun on the astro pitch.

The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in red and white for the England game on Wednesday. It was fantastic to see the effort that went into some of the outfits and accessories, and the children were very excited to show them off.

In English, one of our Pathways to Write groups has been working hard while learning all about Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The children were fascinated to discover more about the brothers’ lives, how they became interested in collecting stories, and how they eventually published a book containing many of their favourite tales. We explored a timeline of their lives and enjoyed quizzing each other on key events.

We have also been getting musical this week with Mrs Richards. The children have enjoyed developing their sense of rhythm by clapping, nodding to beats, and counting them. They then had the opportunity to use the glockenspiels to create their own pieces of music, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

In PE, the children have continued to develop their cricket skills with Coach Jo. This week, the focus was on creating a strong “star” shape with their bodies when bowling. The children began by practising with beanbags before progressing to tennis balls, showing great enthusiasm and determination throughout.

In English, we have been using possessive apostrophes in our writing and we have been describing Blue John dancing with the children in our story.

In maths, we have been looking at square numbers. We have been practising our recall of these key facts and drawing arrays to show the squares. We also started our new topic on fractions. We have been discussing parts and wholes - all of the children recalled this information well.

In geography, we have been learning about rivers. We have been drawing and labelling diagrams of the parts of a river and discussing rivers all over the world.

In cricket this week, we improved our bowling skills. We practiced both underarm and overarm bowling.

On Thursday and Friday, we enjoyed our DT days. We designed and programmed wearable technology, including watches and arm straps for cyclists.

In maths, we have been having an arithmetic focus, in particular with addition and subtraction, and looking at SATs style questions to support our children.

In English, we have been performing 'As you like it' by Shakespeare, and the children have been thoroughly enjoying learning about this play, and writing adverbials and feelings linked to the main character Rosalind.

Finally, we had a trip out to Phoneix Park where we had a great time learning about to be safe around water.

During our English lessons, some of our friends from Cedar Class have been joining us for extended transition sessions. These sessions have provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to get to know one another, while also helping Cedar pupils become familiar with the routines, expectations and learning environment of Sycamore Class.

In Maths, we have continued our learning on place value, strengthening our understanding of how numbers can be partitioned in different ways and developing our confidence in locating and representing numbers on a number line.

Year 5/6 have enjoyed a particularly busy week, with pupils taking part in swimming lessons, a water safety visit and a Forest School session to round off the week. These experiences have provided valuable opportunities for learning beyond the classroom while building confidence, resilience and teamwork skills.

For our 'Tasty Tuesday' this week we made Eton Mess using yoghurt, summer berries and merringe nests.

Wednesday we did a craft of making pur own mascots using cut up pool noodles and decorating them. We ended our session by going up to the field and playing with footballs and hula hoops.

Thursday the children made some beautiful pictures for special people in their life using finger painting. We also celebrated 'International picnic day' by having a picnic and play on the field.

'Film Friday' this week we watched 'Storks'. We also had a large strip of paper stuck to the floor for the children the enjoy some floor doodling! We had a picky snack today of cheese, soft cheese rolls and tomatoes and icepops to cool down.

Transition is going well with new pupils visiting us on Tuesday afternoons. Our older children who are moving up to Sycamore Class in September have started spending P.E. and English lessons with their new friends.

Sharing space is another area to be celebrated this week, as can be seen from some of our photos where children are sharing water play - a favourite area in Cedar Class!
