There are many aspects of different websites that we will both like and dislike due to our own personal preferences, our age, interests and many more factors that allow us to gauge whether we like a website or not. Throughout this padlet I am going to discuss a few categories with my website of choice attached to it that represents my opinion.

First being “Visual appeal & aesthetic: what’s the tone or “feel” of the site”. This aspect is extremely important when it comes to keeping your viewers attention straight off the bat as well as being able to successfully make them feel whatever vibe it is you are trying to give off. As someone who loves to shop, I chose Abercrombie & Fitch for this category. Through and through, A&F consistently articulates the vibe they give off regardless of if it is in their stores or online. As you navigate through the website you are introduced to different sections like the “Pretty Western” section that is on the front page, filled with pieces that perfectly articulate western fashion. I do know that for a lot of people who are invested in the fashion industry, the vibe of the places they are shopping are extremely important to them; and as online shopping has become so popular, these companies have to stay on their A-game.

For the category “Organization & ease of navigation” I have chosen Amazon. I'm sure many of us are aware of the brand as they have made themselves very internationally known but all age groups which I personally find extremely impressive for a company/website to achieve. As you find your way onto this website, you are met with a variety of popular sections/items that they are selling and especially seasonal items. One of the main reasons that Amazon’s website is so easy to navigate is due to the fact that they pretty much sell anything that you would need, and if they do not have exactly what you need there will be similar items that pop up if you’re interested. To some, their website may seem pretty overwhelming as the cover page is filled with a large grouping of items but I think that the way they have everything laid out will still allow you to navigate through everything as you please.

For the category “Integration of audio, video, social media, and text" I have also chosen Amazon. This section also plays a big part in keeping the audience's attention due to how the website integrates these visuals/ if they even implement them at all. Every single section and product that is being sold on Amazon includes a variety of photos that show the product and even videos sometimes. The linked video is a skincare product that demonstrates both the video and photo visual of the product and its purpose. Cb2 also does an amazing job with their integration of visuals. As you visit the website, you are initially met with a very aesthetic video of their new fall collection/new arrivals; the video is short but draws in a lot of attention which can be very difficult when marketing certain aspects of the website you are curating. For this website, each item also entails photos for visual descriptions.

When it comes to the “Accessibility of information: ads, paywalls & subscriptions", a website that I have found to become quite obnoxious/annoying when it comes to subscriptions is the national geographic page. For classes in high school I would always read their magazines for animal content, but when I went onto their website to access more information the website would always block you from accessing more by stating that subscriptions are needed. Another thing that pops up when on the website is the “enable notifications” pop-up which again can be very annoying again due to the pop-ups already being shown for needing a subscription to access the majority of the information wanted by viewers. When I come across websites that barely let you look into their site due to needing a subscription, I find myself never visiting or reaching for that site again. In my opinion, there are more than enough resources throughout the web to find a similar alternative without the need of subscriptions.

use of hyperlinks

Now we are going to look into the “Use of hyperlinks in text” and the importance it has to draw in an audience. Not until recently did I really understand the need for hyper links until I took this course and gained some knowledge on how and why they’re used. I’ve stated in another assignment that I can appreciate the use of hyperlinks especially in articles due to it being the perfect gate-way for additional information if the reader is interested, but also the readers can skip past the hyperlinks if they are not interested. The website I have chosen for this is a CNN sports article. As you scroll down to the sections underneath the title there are certain words that are underlined as well as bolded that send you to another article/website when you click onto it which allows the audience to continue their reading on that specific thing somewhere else but they can also come back to the original article to finish off their reading. The use of hyperlinks are great for those who get overwhelmed with a large amount of information because it gives you the freedom to read what you'd like.

style of writing

Next we are going to discuss the importance of “Style of Writing & positioning of the content creators”. Again, I am going to use the CNN article because I like the wording that was used within the article. I do not consider myself to be a huge sports fan as I am not too knowledgeable on sports, so this article doesn’t necessarily appeal to me but I know that those who are interested in sports would find this to be a good article. As we first start reading the article, the publishers use sports terminology when explaining certain things that occurred to allow the intended audience to better understand what is being written. For example, the article says “His first touchdown pass of the game, a 20-yard strike to Dalton Kincaid, was his 300th (passing and rushing combined) touchdown in the NFL, including playoffs”. Which to those who don’t tune into any sports wouldn't fully understand that sentence, but those who are into sports would have the complete opposite experience.

“Ideal audience: describe and identify their needs” is one of the most important categories in my eyes due to your audience being the ones that determine if your website was successfully made or not. When you’re creating a website, there are many factors to consider when thinking about your audience and how you would like your content to come across to them. If you cannot meet their basic needs (language, content, aesthetic) then retaining them will become a struggle. Ulta Beauty does a great job at providing their audience with their needs due to how they have chosen to lay out their website, not only that but they have made it clear as to who is their ideal audience. I'm very much into makeup myself, so considering myself to be a part of their ideal audience I can appreciate all the contents they have provided (specified sections, gifting items for the holidays, daily deals..etc).

“Overall purpose of the site” is a great way for the audience to understand what the meaning of the contents of the website is and what message they are trying to get across. This is highly important because without this, the likelihood of a website which lacks a purpose will most likely struggle to receive website views and interactions. Audiences, especially intended audience look for websites that they feel called to and feel at place with, not a website that has some of what seems to be targeted to them and then a whole bunch of irrelevant content/information. I will use Ulta again due to the fact that you can visually see the purpose of the website. If you are into makeup, you know that Ulta is the type of makeup website/store that typically has deals on a variety of items, even trending ones unlike most other makeup websites/stores.
