Explore your classroom, school, or community, and try to search for the gifts among your students. Look for signs of exceptional abilities, such as advanced problem-solving skills, intense curiosity, or remarkable creativity. Share your stories and strategies with your peers. What is it about them that captures your attention? Take a few minutes to jot down your thoughts and share them with your peers in the discussion forum. Remember, each one of you has a unique perspective to bring to the table!

In my school we do not have many gifted students that belong to this category according law. I can count them on two fingers. I do not teach them yet because they are on primary level. On the other hand I know several students who are not "labeled" as gifted but they show amazing skills either in language area or in the artistic area. As a language teacher I try to support students who are focudes on languages by creating different assignments for them, their speaking tasks are on higher level, they are given different tests etc. Artistic students excel in project where the focus is also on the visual side. They may be not as good in language but they are valluable part of the team.

Alex was a quiet but inquisitive student in my 5th-grade class. He had a keen interest in science and often asked questions that went beyond the scope of our curriculum. His intense curiosity was evident from the moment he stepped into my classroom.
Observation: I noticed that Alex consistently scored at the top of his class in science assessments, and his answers showed a depth of understanding that exceeded his grade level.
Classroom Participation: During class discussions, Alex not only answered questions accurately but also elaborated on concepts in a way that fascinated his classmates. His explanations were clear and insightful.
Independent Projects: Recognizing his passion for science, I encouraged Alex to undertake independent research projects. He chose to explore the life cycle of butterflies and presented his findings to the class with a beautifully illustrated poster that far exceeded my expectations.
Problem-Solving Skills: In a group project where students had to design a contraption to solve a real-world problem, Alex's team came up with a creative and efficient solution that impressed both me and his peers. His problem-solving skills were remarkable.
Interests Beyond the Curriculum: I discovered that Alex spent his free time reading advanced science books and conducting experiments at home. He was genuinely passionate about learning and exploring the natural world.
Peer Feedback: His classmates often praised his willingness to help them understand complex topics, and they admired his intelligence and dedication to learning.
Parental Involvement: When I discussed Alex's abilities and interests with his parents during a parent-teacher conference, they shared that he had been passionate about science since a very young age. They were supportive of his educational journey and eager to provide additional resources to nurture his talent.
Recognizing Alex's giftedness, I collaborated with the school's gifted education program to tailor his learning experiences. He was given the opportunity to attend advanced science workshops and even participated in a regional science fair, where he won a prize for his project on butterfly behavior.
As Alex progressed through the grades, his talents continued to shine, and he eventually pursued a career in scientific research, making significant contributions to the field of entomology. His journey from a curious 5th grader to a renowned scientist was a testament to the importance of identifying and nurturing gifted students to help them reach their full potential.

However, I do know the cases from the groups that I teach, that there are many students who demonstrate their talents in a completely different ways. They can think 'out of the box' and sometimes surprise me with their answers and ideas.

I had a gifted students in my early teaching years. It's a unique experience, as a human being you know that there is something different with that child. And different is always good. He was extremely curious, way ahead of the what the teacher was about to say. He had multiple skills and he could be the best in all of them. As time went by I came to know that as an adult he had a tragic end. I guess we need to look more carefully to these special situations.
Last year I also had a student that it could be considered gifted as he was extremely ahead of his peers, especially on social and emotional levels. This was visible on the way we almost acted as out of his age.

However, I sometimes struggle with the way we/parents/authorities/over-eager colleagues want to label them "gifted". In my understanding, being truly gifted is a far way from "just" being talented in languages / mathematics / public speaking / arts / ... The scales mentioned in the material are helpful.

In my country, I would love to see programs and ways to encourage BOTH types of students - the tradtional "good" ones, who ask interesting questions, have fun developing their skills and are eager to improve and the "truly gifted" ones, who definitely are a league of their own. However, I sometimes feel that we often focus exentsively on the weaker students, which - just to make that clear - is just as important, and then do not find the time/energy/competence to help the talented and gfited students shine.

As an English language teacher, I can say that students gifted in languages aare those who pick up language with ease. This is reflected in their fluency and accuracy, and very often the inability to remember certain grammar rules. This happens because they feel natural in speaking English without thinking about grammar rules.

In my country, unfortunately, schools still don`t give much importance to the diagnosis of gifted students, or the possibility that they need support. Only those who have interested parents, and with some economic power, turn to specialists to be diagnosed. They are then referred to associations, dedicated to this type of students, to provide them with the necessary support.
Personally, I have never worked with students diagnosed as gifted. However, now that I study the subject in greater detail, I see some signs in previous students that could indicate possible giftedness.
I think that, in Portugal, there is still a lot of work to be done, in order to help these children develop their potential (not just the academic part). There are associations that are already doing great work in raising awareness among the educational community and legislators, but there is still a lot of work to do in this area.

I am an EFL teacher and I can notice the talented and gifted students among my students. Not all have the same set of characteristics but, they tend to be - a great curiosity and desire for learning, ability to comprehend and explain advances concepts at a younger age then their peers, great meorising skills, great oral and writing skills, is usually a leader of the group, is at times impatient and shows frustration when others don't know something, some of them refer to work alone. These are just some things I notice. They have never taken a test to dermine this, but I regard them as gifted. They are most often my helpers, they like helping others doing the task.

I remember he used to get bored very easily with textbooks and worksheets and we got to a point where his motivation was very low. He had lots of interests that had to be fulfilled as nothing that was part of the curriculum was challenging for him. Hence, he needed tasks that required research and creativity along with some guidance. Such tasks increased his motivation and implication and affected his learning outcomes in a very positive way.

Talented students can be identified in several ways. Sometimes, they have a greater interest than their peers in the most difficult areas of the subject I teach (physics and chemistry). Other times, the speed with which they solve problems is much greater than that of the rest of the students. But there are still times when a student with high abilities does not excel in a particular subject, because his most developed area does not correspond to the one worked. In these cases, it is difficult for teachers to detect high capacity. And that makes it difficult to adapt the curriculum (Secondary School)

The question arises as to how to distinguish a gifted child from a highly motivated child. High ability is marked to indicate high potential in various areas of human capabilities. High student ability refers to students whose ability is more advanced than that of their peers in one or more different fields (intellectual, physical, creative, social). Teachers use a variety of strategies and activities to involve high-ability students. Strategies vary depending on the age of the student, but also the subject being taught. Teachers should bring depth and complexity to their teaching.
