"retired" has the connotation that we are inactive; but many people, once they have left their paid job, then go on to lead a very active life. Another term, which central government seems to favour, is "economically inactive", which is of course not at all correctly descriptive of older people in general: older people contribute a great deal to the economy, both in cash and kind. The words used by an individual gives clues to whom they may have spoken, or who is influencing their thoughts and opinions. Of course the attitudes to accent are rarely a target for official opinion, yet often are a great influence of how a person is seen. An educated person does not have a local accent-or so it seems.
The word "capacity" is also used in many contexts. It is often combined with or a vague reference to "the elderly".
