GlaxSmithKline (GSK)
A large pharmaceutical company which has many career opportunities for microbiology graduates including quality assurance.

Unilever
One of the largest and most well known consumer goods companies. They have a huge variety of roles available for both graduates and undergraduates from placements to apprenticeships.

Career Spotlight: Field Microbiologist
This job role involves working for a company such as Serve Medical and travelling to different companies such as GSK and Unilever to test and decontaminate their clean rooms. These are essential for their research and manufacturing pharmaceuticals (GSK) which need to be carried out in places with very low levels of environmental contamination such as airborne microbes.

A PhD or masters may help to you to go into more senior roles, such as project management, or help you more easily get the job you want but it is better to get the qualifications when they are needed rather than be over qualified.

Senior Quality Control Microbiologist
This is a role that requires experience that comes with doing post- graduate studies and can lead to opportunities to work abroad with companies such as Genzyme who are based in the USA but also have a strand in the UK.

Research and Development

Environmental Agency
They're in charge of all environmental affairs including flooding and waste. A career with them could lead to you becoming a water quality scientist, testing both waste and drinking water for hazardous chemicals and microbes.
There are lots of other jobs on offer as well as this!

Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
It does what it says on the tin and have many job opportunities both scientific and non scientific that can involve working in the marine environment and with animals.

World Health Organisation (WHO)
This group keep a close eye on circulating diseases and the quality of health systems across the world. A job with this company could lead you to travelling around the world!

Career Spotlight: Science Writer
Communicating science to the general public is important to spread awareness of important topics and letting people know what's going on in the science world. You could write for newspaper such as The Guardian or a science magazine such as New Scientist.
