After a few moments of teasing and pretending to be friends with Nirdlinger's servant, he lets her in even though her employer is not at home. Walter ends up talking to Phyllis, the wife of his client, who is blue-eyed, blond-haired, and attractive but somehow exhausted. She keeps Walter talking, saying that the car club tried to sell her husband their  insurance badge and membership.

The witness Phyllis brings is someone Walter really doesn't like because it's Phyllis' daughter, Lola. Phyllis makes up the excuse that she needs Lola to help her weave a yarn, to make sure Lola is there to listen to Walter pitch the accident insurance policy, which she does, underlining every possible selling point. Walter thinks to himself that he was waiting for Phyllis to bring  a friend or a neighbor. She didn't bargain for her daughter to be there and it makes her uncomfortable thinking about what they are  doing to her father. In the end, he is forced to catch his daughter and give her to the cinema.

He goes to interview a long-term prospect at, comes back to the office and makes him a card, then  goes home and has a Filipino houseboy serve him dinner. After the  meal, Walter is getting ready for bed at a quarter past eight when the houseboy comes to visit one last time before heading out for the day. The plan was that mrs. Nirdlinger was to forget her notebook, and they needed to get Mr. Nirdlinger out the car so Mr. Huff could get in the back seat. After a while they had come to a planned dark street. Mrs. Nirdlinger beeped the horn twice, that was Mr. Huff sign. Mr. Huff put his hand over his mouth and took one of the crutches and hooked it under his chin. Two seconds later Mr. Nirdlinger was curled down in the seat with a broken neck.

Leaving the corpse in the locked car seat, they take Nirdlinger's bag, briefcase and crutches and  walk to the station. He knows that the train takes 6 minutes  to reach this place and 11 minutes to leave the station because he checked it 20 times. He waits but sees nothing. Then he hears panting and footsteps. To him, it looks like something nightmarish is approaching, but then he sees that Phyllis is  carrying her 200-pound husband on her back using the same harness that Walter used. 
     They dump Nirdlinger's body by the side of the road and then escape in a car.

Walter recounts the agreement, adding that Nirdlinger told him not to share  the existence of the policy with his wife, Phyllis, or his daughter, Lola. Keyes and Norton are on to the case. Mr Keyes, is obsessed by convincing Norton it was suicide. But Mr. Norton isn’t convinced. She tells Walter that her mother died of pneumonia in a winter cabin on a lake, and it so happens that the companion who was with her was her nurse, Phyllis.
