They had to learn how to adjust to this new lifestyle of farming on different lands and working modern  technology/irrigation systems. The Dawes Act of 1887 gave Native families 160 acres of land, which was not widely accepted/appreciated because it wasn't their "communal" or tribal lands. Life was hard because the children had to attend schools, where their cultural hair had to be cut short, their clothes worn a certain way, and they could only speak English.
