Though not the most important holiday, Chanukah is the most recognizable holiday to gentiles. Chanukah marks the miracle following great victory of the Jews over the Seleucid Greeks. After reclaiming the Temple of Jerusalem, tradition required candles to be lit every night. However, the Jews only possessed enough oil to keep the candles lit for one night. Miraculously, the candles burned for eight nights, long enough for new oil to be prepared. The main celebration is the lighting of the menora for eight nights. Every night, kids roll dreidels to determine what gifts they will receive. In elementary school, a Jewish kid in my class brought a menorah and dreidels to school and taught about Chanukah and basic Jewish practices.
