When he was not even six years old his mother left to America so she could provide for their family. Years later Enrique has a girlfriend, named Maria Isabel, that hates him at first, but soon they fall in love. Enrique is devastated about the loss of his mother so he spirals into a drug addiction, and his families life is threatened when he can't pay his debts. His girlfriend becomes pregnant with their child.
 Soon after, Enrique leaves Guatemala to be with his mother. He believes that being with his mom will solve all of his problems. He makes seven valiant attempts to reach his mother. However, they all end with him being mugged, abused, beaten, or almost killed. He battles gangsters on top of trains, corrupt migrant police, bandits and robbers all on his trip north.
On his eighth trip, Enrique journeyed on top of a train. This is a very popular form of travel for migrants to America. Enrique stays at the banks of Rio Grande safely at campground he saves some money which he uses to call his mother. She agrees to bring a smuggler over to get him across to America.

He begins to save money to bring his Maria Isabel, and their baby daughter Jasmin, to America. Although, his drinking problem prevents him from sending much. Time passes and Enrique confronts his mother and addiction and both conflicts are laid to rest. He and his mother raise enough money to bring Maria Isabel to America. Some argue that immigrants only bring drugs and crime while others say that they are just fellow humans searching for a better life. Since President Trump campaigns he talks about building a wall between Mexico and America also getting rid of essential immigrant programs such as DACA. More recently, Trump is deporting mothers and fathers back to the countries they were born in, separating families and sometimes leaving children as orphans.
