Magnetism can occur between a magnet and an unmagnetized ferromagnetic object. Ferromagnetic materials are made from iron, nickel, or cobalt. There will always be an attraction between a magnet and an unmagnetized ferromagnetic material. Magnets are ferromagnetic objects that are permanently magnetized.

A magnet will point toward the geographical North Pole of the earth (thus becoming the north pole end of the magnet). The opposite end is the south pole. When like poles of two magnets come close to each other, they will repel each other. When unlike poles come close to each other, they will attract each other. (Law of magnetic poles)

There are many tiny entities within a ferromagnetic object called magnetic domains. They act like a bar magnet with north and south poles. In an unmagnetized object, the magnetic domains are arranged randomly. But when a magnet passes over it, the magnetic domains become rearranged and follow the magnet. The north poles all go in the same direction.

All magnets are surrounded by a magnetic field. The maximum strength of the magnetic field depends on them amount and type of the magnet. The field gets weaker as the distance from the magnet increases. Explains why magnets can interact without touching.
