To check, go to > file > share > apple devices 720p (this will export your film in its current state) Open this new movie film and play it back outside of FCPX. a blue arrow should indicate 
File > Relink files
Click this and then click your folder which contains all the files. 2) delete the negative space you want. (i.e. if you want to layer a visual over your film so you can see bits through it)
3) Make sure your 'background layer is hidden - turn the 'eye' off (you should see the checkerboard)
4) save as "PNG" file
5) Put in your image(s) file and import it back into final cut pro x.

Once you re-open FCPX - you might find you need to remind the software where the folders have now moved to.
