I've been hesitant to show video clips or play audio read-aloud books in my ELL students' native languages, as one of the parents said that they keep English as a "school only" thing and only speak Spanish at home. After reading this chapter, though, I feel like I should play stories in other languages to encourage both languages, instead of having a "school only" language.

I did like the ideas about using key words in different languages. That is an achievable goal and wouldn’t require too much extra work, but could help them understand better if the right keywords were chosen and associated with the content. I also liked the audio recording idea of greetings or other things in the students’ language. That could at least show you care about all of your students which helps academic achievement.

Promoting a single culture and prioritizing a language is often the goal. The problem is that along with the native language, the culture of the student is also affected, as such it is referred to as “deculturization”. It is said that it comes at a cost to the student at home who is asked not to speak the language of its parents. I wish to avoid creating a subtractive program culture where the L2 or L3 comes at the expense of L1.
