The basis of this padlet is on the Whitehall Study (1991) which found people in low earning jobs have limited control over their jobs, as well as their lives. This can lead to higher stress levels, which in turn, is associated with higher death rates from stroke and heart attacks.

This is scary, least of all because in some cases, it's true. While I (fortunately) have not had experience with co-workers meeting their untimely deaths due to work overload, I have seen the effect of those in the lower ranks becoming burnt out due to the pressure of their workload to meet the demands of the 'big boss'. A friend of mine is a high school teacher and in her first year as a full-time teacher her stress levels were through the roof due to the enormous workload she had to deal with. When it came time for a break in-between teaching periods, as soon as she relaxed her body would just fall apart (not literally) and she would be extremely sick, only recovering just in time to start the new teaching period.

With stress comes anxiety. Stress that you have an unreasonable workload and anxiety at the prospect of failing and possibly losing your job. Ultimately it proves detrimental to the workplace. If someone burns out and is unable to work, that just creates more work for others, who may in turn, burn out themselves. A viscous cycle where no-one wins. I witnessed this first hand in my current job, where, during a team meeting, my manager gave the team quite a verbal lashing on poor work performance taking us all by surprise as we thought we had been working quite hard. As a result, my fellow colleague took a week off on stress leave which just put more strain on the rest of us. As such I found that by the week's end I was shattered and spent the majority of the weekend sleeping. Not exactly good for my mind or body considering I would usually be studying or outside taking my dog on a long walk.
