it's a legal document between client and company which says about the details that need to be in the project without confusion. It outlines what needs to be done by the company and how they organise their work. there is also guidelines the client and company have to go by which they both agree to at the start of the project. A very formal document.

When using a contractual brief everything is covered legally like the insurance.
With this brief you get paid straight after the job is done which is certain because of a document you have to sign before hand which is safe and makes people get to their deadline quicker.

A disadvantage is that you might not get on with the company and might not be able to agree on terms and rules that need to be discussed before and makes the work relationship bad from the start which makes the process of the project a lot longer and makes it harder for the both to work together if it is a long project and will make it not bearable to work.

Client will advertise what product they need producing with a vague detail of what they need with it. production companies will then write a proposal.
Advantage is gives them a wide variety of idea without really doing anything. Disadvantage is that they don't get a contract for the product so it's not reliable work. Client has to be reliable on the producer wanting to produce it.

Two or more producers working together on a brief and say different ideas to each other. More common in larger scale like film production.
Advantage is that it provides a range of ideas for the project which you can bounce off the other person and get a new spark. Another advantage is that it has a bigger budget for the project. A disadvantage is that there's a lot of debating with each other about using their own idea. Another disadvantage is hierarchy arguments.

A brief that is produced by the client and producer following various discussions and meetings. brief will then be made after the discussions after both sides have put something into it. An advantage is it gives an opportunity for both parties to be involved massively and they can persuade them more. A disadvantage is that a problem with it could not be resolved at all. Another disadvantage is there could be a possible problem that has occurred and they then work together to fix it.

When a brief is put on the public domain and anyone can submit a brief and there is then a winner chosen for that one project and then the winner gets a prize and there brief is chosen to be in the production. Advantage is Client only has to payout to the producer. Another advantage is that the client receives a lot of quality products. A disadvantage is your not guaranteed any payment and if you put your own money into the production you might not even make money back from it.

A big media company come to a small media company and give them an idea to do and the small company do all the work but the big company get a cut from it. An advantage is the large company have to do little work and still get a cut from it. Another advantage is the little company get a mention and can big themselves up. A disadvantage is there could be disagreement and conflict. Another is the large company own the rights of the project and the small company feel like they should have part own-age for the rights.
