Analytical chemistry is the science of obtaining, processing, and communicating information about the composition and structure of matter. In other words, it is the art and science of determining what matter is and how much of it exists. Analytical chemists are generally involved with making measurements by using sophisticated state-of-the-art computer controlled instrumentation in government laboratories and laboratories in all areas of the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and food industries.

Izaak Maurits Kolthoff was a pioneer in analytical chemistry whose research led to the improvement of synthetic rubber during World War II. During and after the war, Kolthoff played a role in relocating European scientists who were persecuted by Nazis to U.S. institutions through a program led by the Rockefeller Foundation. He corresponded with influential science and political leaders including Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Linus Pauling, and Hubert Humphrey in efforts to promote world peace, oppose nuclear weapons testing, and engage in other social concerns of the time.
