People with this condition have their alveoli ruptured or weakened, this creates larger air spaces, which reduces the surface area on the lungs and therefore the amount of oxygen that reaches the bloodstream. 

The main causes for emphysema are air pollution, exposure to chemical fumes and tobacco smoke.
