As a Technology teacher I often use space linked examples in order to explain my matter. For examples when my pupils study ecology and how we can preserve our enviroment I always make them see the "pale blue dot" picture and let them listen Carl Sagan words.
When we study telecommunications I use the gravity laws to explain how geostationary satellites works.
When we study ceramic materials I show my pupils the cermic thermic shield of the space shuttle.
Or when we study the meter as unit of measurement I explain the Eratosthens experiment and how the Earth orbits around the Sun.
These are only a small parts of how Technology studies can link to space and astronomy.
When I use space to explain something to them their eyes start to shine and they pay a lot of attention.

Last year with my students (11 and 12 years old) we explored the space theme in a course of robotics and computational thinking that lasted the whole year. Students worked in groups and tried to solve problems related to space (shuttle launch, landing and moving arround in another planet, searching for life etc) by designing and creating robots and programming them. My impression is that the whole process was rewarding and fun for everyone.

I run a Space Explorers 3 weeks project with my 7 year old students during the last school year. Was awesome! We developed a lot of great activities like: Designing a space suit, Searching for Aliens, Travel inside the Earth or Craters on the Moon. Our last Christmas Show (a show made in colaboration with our kindergarten) was Christmas in 2753. Was a HIT! We listen a lot of space music (Vangelis, Mike Oldfield, The Planets Suite by Gustav Holst), we wrote and illustrate science- fiction stories, made space crafts and models. Sports were transformed in astronaut's physical training and math was a merge between problem solving, measurements, logical games and so on. I definitely reload the space project this school year, too. My new class motto is The limits of our imagination are the space frontiers. The name of the class is Space kids. So...

I have used Space Sciences and Astronomy Themes in Natural Science lessons in the past, according the Cyprus curriculum for 3rd-6th grade in primary education.

Since all primary students are fascinated by the space, these are some aspects that came in my mind:

1) Learning Mathematics by calculating planet distances etc.

2) Teaching of History (i.e. looking for secret myths about the planets or looking for information for each planet’s history )

3) Language lessons (use the names of the planets, or universe terms in an essay or a grammar exercise etc. )

4) Teaching of Music (i.e. look or search for songs or poems which are “linked” with space )

5) Role playing ( for example children pretend to be the planets, the sun etc. and try to “create” our solar system by using their bodies. )

6) Teach Physics, Chemistry, Biology by using space and astronomy themes.

In a few words, space can be related with all school subjects. Teachers only need imagination and creativity. Thanks!! "

The physics curriculum in Scotland has a large "space" content. As a result I have been using space as a context in many of my lessons. I teach from 6th to 8th grade and I always talk about Space and Astronomy ( I have studied physics ). Usually I like to amaze pupils with spectacular youtube video of stars, and other galaxies items. One of my challenges in teaching is motivating my students and maintaining their interest throughout the whole lesson. Space and astronomy will always be a subject that fascinates the students and as Mr. Miley states, the Universe is a source of wonder for both young and old people. I try to present to my students topics related to space in subjects such as gravity, circular motion, free fall etc. Last year we participate in “Globe at night”, an international campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of light pollution by inviting citizen-scientists to measure their night sky brightness. We observed constellations such as Orion and Leo and submitted our observations. My pupils were delighted! A year earlier we have studied the life and work of Galileo Galilei. My students really liked it, too.
I am looking forward to exchange ideas with you and make our lessons more interesting!

My fouth grade students will be studying topic Space during this school year. In Finland our new 2016 curriculum guides us to cover space topic during the fourth school year. It also requires to introduce and utilize inquiry learning. So I this course was made for me!
Previously I've taught Space topic through project work, e.g. a Space fair, similar to Science fair, and also ordinary group projects.

I am not a teacher but I want to consider myself an Informal Educator. I give talks and participate in hands-on activities related to Astronomy. I think that Astronomy can be the first approach to all the other sciences: Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc. This link will make people, in this case students, get more interested in them. Maybe not all of them will pursue a career in STEM areas, but they will have a deeper understanding of Science and Technology, especially in these years that we are surrounded by it, and that will make them less easy to deceive by pseudosciences.

Hi all, it must sound quite crazy that at present there is no substantial space science present on the Irish physics curriculum. We do however cover circular motion related to planetary motion and students enjoy using Newtons laws and Kepler's 3rd Law for calculating gravity and period values among other thing. We would also cover red and blue shifts of distant stars in which students discover that the universe is expanding.

Personally, I haven't use Space Sciences to explain other subjects. I only have taught the concepts of the curriculum, when it is stipulated. In our school, our students built a rocket with the Technology teacher and make a contest in the Science Day of our School. Hello, I'm a teacher in the Lower Secondary School in Italy. I teach Science and Math, and the basics of astronomy are part of the curriculum. So I usually explain extensively the structure of the Solar system, stars, planets and the other celestial objects and Kepler's law during the last year, but it happened to make many references earlier.

For instance, talking about motion, in particular the first Newton's law and the inertia, I refer to the film "Gravity" that some students have usually seen and we explain what happens in the light of the first law.
Last year, some students asked me about gravitational waves and why their observation was so important.
During the module about space I also make a couple of activities: I've prepared and uploaded an online activity with Google Module that they have to carry out in groups, using two different apps on Phet: "My solar system" and "Gravity and Orbits". Furthermore, I make an individual activity in class: considering which are the requirements for life and reading some excerpts about some planets and satellites, students have to analyse the text and find which celestial objects could host or develop life.

It has proved an exciting part of the syllabus and learners were captivated by its magic! I’m Cristina, and I teach Italian Language, History and Geography at the lower secondary school. Last year my team proposed to our 8th grade students a multi-disciplinary project about space. It has been a very positive experience. With me students read some science fiction stories and some poems inspired by the starry sky, in pairs they made enquiry about one of the planets of the solar system, prepared a multimedial presentation and explained their topic to the other students. Two pupils realized a timeline about the history of the space exploration. As the final product they prepared an exhibit for their parents and for the other classes.

With 5th graders we explore Earth as a planet. We compare size of the Earth, Moon & Sun and the movement of these three in 6th grade. Hi! I am a primary school teacher in Cyprus and according to our National Curriculum we often come across Space Sciences and Astronomy themes in different subjects.
- In Natural Sciences (4th and 6th Grade) and in Geography (5th and 6th Grade): shape and movements of Earth, day - night - seasons of the year, moon phases, solar and lunar eclipse, our solar system, magnets - gravity
- Environmental Education (5th and 6th Grade): global warming, climate change
- Greek Language: units with sci-fi stories
- Maths: the difference between mass and weight, reading, writing and making calculations with big numbers relevant to the size or distance of other planets

Whenever I teach aspects of Space Science and Astronomy themes the children are so enthusiastic and and the have so many questions! Some extra activities that they usually like to do are:
- Searching and presenting to their classmates information about planets (history and greek mythology), the first astronoms, astronauts, reports about life in other planets etc.
- Making models of our solar system or the phenomena of lunar/solar eclipse, using different materials, and voting for the best and more precise model
- Writing sci-fi stories

Hi everyone . I am a mathematician and also a big fun of space and astronomy. I teach maths in a middle school and in a high school in the Kalamata, south Greece.
I often use space in my teaching beacuase :
1.Space related topics can make pupils understand the use of STEM lessons
2. Generates their curiosity
3. Helps them to set goals concerning STEM sciences.
4. can help them to clear misunderstandings about our universe.
For most pupils space is fun and inspiring .

Hello everybody!!!!!! As a science teacher in the middle school, I teach a module of astronomy and space science in my third classes. I like it very much, I love cosmology and astronomy and I agree that these topics engage some of my students to a large extent. But some of them fell frustrated because cosmological theories are too hard to understand. That's why I would like to learn methods to raise their interest and to pass down my love for space.

I conducted lesson about space,rocket and astronomy with kids here.
Last March ,we experienced partial solar eclipse phenomena and i organized online partial solar lesson for Malaysian schools and kids. Around 1000+ students and teachers participate in the activities provided.
In school, teachers organize solar eclipse party and observation and sent their pictures and feedback on the site provided.
I interested with this course because i want to improve my approach in teaching space and astronomy to Malays

I am a physics and chemistry teacher (from Portugal) so I teach a lot of subjects related with space science.
As it is a matter of my own interest happens often end up talking about space in my classes (not my fault... many of my students also love it).

Among other activities I am involved, I would like to share one in particular.

At my university, we created in 2013 a course named Basic Astronomy, offered to all undergraduate courses.

We teach the basis of Astronomy, make some workshops, invite to our month observations and, as a final task, the students have to present a presentation about a topic which relates Astronomy to their professional area.

It has proved to be very interesting, showing how Astronomy is a transdisciplinary area. They present since astronomy theme on arts (arts students) to space legislation (law and international relation students).

The motivation factor is huge and i can use it to develop activities whithin several subjetcts. I decided to celebrate the World Space Week (themed "Exploration" for 2015) with them. So we engaged ourselves in making new friends, like Hubble, Rosetta and Philae, exploring new places like the I.S.S. or the moon surface, help the universe make its biography and some comets get brand-new games, creating new "constellations of knowledge" upon the classroom's walls... And the list of crazy adventures that came upon our way was limitless! We then participated in the Mission-X challenge and found ourselves cooking a comet to celebrate it! As George said, Space and Astronomy are areas of transdisciplinary knowledge and directly linked to fundamental sciences such as physics and chemistry. In my opinion, astronomy is strongly linked to our collective memory, in a pleasant way as the rainbow, dolphins or whales, so it can be an excellent catalyst for learning the fundamental sciences.

In Portugal, the curriculum of physics and chemistry contains a specific unit related to the study of space, in the 7th grade. However, there are other subject areas directly related to space and astronomy, such as Stephan-boltzmann's law; Wien's law; kepler's laws; nature of light and eletromagnetism.

I am an Italian teacher, I teach science in the upper secondary school. In this level of education system it is mandatory to teach astronomy in the first year, to students under 14-15 years of age. I have had the opportunity to teach (with traditional direct instruction) the structure of the universe, the classification of galaxies, the life and the classification of stars, the structure of the Solar System and the differences between the planets of the Solar System. I usually talk about space & astronomy in my Physics class whe we explore certain law of Physics such as Kepler's or Newton's laws. We also discuss the different theories about the origin of life in our planet....
And if I have the opportunity to attend any event related with astronomy near my area, I always attend to it with my students. For example in January and in November 2014 my students and myself travelled to a Science Museum in Granada, a town which is 3 h from our place, to witness Rosetta's awakening and Philae's landing or " cometing" and from those historical moments the curiosity of my staudents in these themes increased. Therefore we did a project about it that we called
" Rosetta rendevous with a comet: Expecting the unexpected". We presented this project in different Science fairs in Spain.

I am a Science teacher in the secondary school; I’ve been teaching since last years and I taught Astronomy in the first class. I used the classic frontal lesson with discussions and some reading to stimulate reflections; videos were also very meaningful to develop students' curiosity. I also taught Geography in that class and it was easy to make connections between the two subjects. I didn’t know about the site space-awareness, I’ve just explored and I think it’s a fantastic resources!!! I will surely use it next years!!!

Not only I have the privilege to teach subjects directly related to space, as Astronomy and general Physics, but I also have the opportunity to challenge students to follow the example of role models such as the astronauts Pedro Duque (from our neighbor country!), Frank De Winne, and more recently Samantha Christoforetii. I am physical and chemical teacher in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal. According to our National Curriculum we teach astronomy in 7th grade (11-13 years old): theories of the universe; space exploration; solar system; distances in the universe; and so on …but also in secondary school (10th grade).  In my classes we discuss aspects of science, make models of our solar system and use movies about gravity (exemple  www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQiSP1hmt0A)   and space missions  (like Apollo 13,  Rosetta Mission). Children are enthusiastic about Astronomy themes and ask so many questions!

Hi ! I'm French teacher and despite the fact that foreign languages don't have any obvious relation with astronomy and space, I assure you that it can be very interesting! We need just imagination! I had 2 years ago an e-twinning project which was based on the Jules Verne novel: "from the earth to the moon" Through this project my students learned about the writer (who was French) about space vocabulary in French, about cultural elements (late 19th century and early 20th century) having to do with the cosmic view of that time. We created our own missiles, we designed the space making posters and finally we imagined another end of the story by creating comics and using simple phrases in French. It was a great experience !

I am a High School physics teacher in Romania and I consider very important all topics in astronomy and astrophysics field to motivate and create an image integrating students about their world - the Universe!

Hi! I am an Art teacher in two secondary schools in Croatia. I also teach extracurricular Astronomy for beginners. I often use space motives in my Art class. I've participated in three Sally Ride EarthKAM missions and I think it is a great way to motivate students to use technology and learn about space and universe in school.

I teach English in a lower secondary school in Italy and although it could seem that foreign languages have nothing to do with science I think we can identify several points of contact with other curricula.

While studying at your school, students come across space topic in a quite large amount of subjects: Physics, Biology, Geography and in some subjects in primary education. That's why we decided to sum up this topic this way - the oldest students at the beginning of September start to prepare "A day with space" for their younger schoolmates. They make groups, each group choose a topic and they teach it to their schoolmates. It happens during one day, at the end of September (that's why it is call A day with space)

I am an Irish Science teacher. I specialise in Chemistry but teach general science to Junior Cycle students (12-15 year olds). Recently our Junior Cycle Science curriculum has changed with the addition of a new strand 'Earth and Space'. I'm really looking forward to introducing and teaching this branch of science to my students. In the past I have used concepts like gravity to get the students thinking about space. Just this week I had a second year class using newton metres to find the weights of various objects in the classroom and getting them to investigate the weights of the same objects if they were on different planets and moons taking their relative gravities into account.

Hello, I’m a maths and science teacher in a middle school. I like the photo of earth from space and I use it to talk about global environmental problems. Last year I try to explain about the gravity waves news were talking about and we watch a video about relativity and GPS! It wasn’t easy and difficult to connect with Newton gravity. It would be nice to find better materials on the topic. We went to visit a planetarium as well. We listen on line to an interview at Samantha Cristofoletti when she came back home. We watch some videos from ESA called Newton in space very appreciated by my students and we try some of the experiences. All this activities were done with my 13 years old students. I usually introduce Astronomy a little to 11 years students talking about the power of 10.

Young pupils are fascinated by space and I always try to make it part of my lessons using game through theatre including movement, music and expression of feelings. Hello ..space dreamers all over the world! My name is Katerina Atmatzidou and I teach Math in a Greek high secondary school. Last year it was the first time that in my own teaching practice used Space Science and Astronomy theme. I had an eTwinning Math project, named "Math Investigation", with my partner. One of the "missions" of the project was "Sun activities". Among the others we used Sun, shadows, measurements, Geogebra and theory of similar triangles to calculate the Earth's radio or the height of our school. My students loved this part of the project.Astronomy was a separate school subject a years ago, but not any more. So The only way to learn about is to use it as a thematical background in some other lessons. I Greek astronomers from the ancient Greece were famous pioneers. Astronomy is related to Greek culture.It is part of our science. So I took part in this learning group hoping to share useful ideas. This year I plan to form a team in my school ""STARRY SKY" and collaborate with students from all over the world! The program's goal is to become an initial familiarity with the night sky. Even if a participant in the future of his life gazing at the sky, he realizes some things to him or even recognizes a constellation, I believe that the program gave something.

I have already made plans about visiting observatories in Athens and I schedule an excursion in an environmental center somewhere in Greece in order to take part in a learning event about Space and Astronomy. Finally I am going to use problems and excersices to connect the project in curriculum: in Geometry, trigonometry, Algebra, Statistic and Calculus, getting inspiration from space. I have many ideas about the project . For example: 1. Exposure at night, depending on features or Human Nature. 2. Construct an Anelamma. 3.The ancient Greeks had four star categories: Their delusion, their planets, comets (komoentes stars) and shooting. (What does each category?)
4. The stars are symbols? Eg flags, brands (Examples. Why?)
5. Three historians stations - persons marked astronomy: Galileo, Messier, Hubble.
6. Looking at the stars at night, how far you can see our eye? Are the stars countless ?
7. The movement of the sun over time.
8. The motion of the Moon during the month.
9. With a telescope you intend in the night sky?

I am so exciting about the prospect of a new etwinning project related to Astronomy! Here is one of the posters that my students designed about the :Math Investigation" we had last year. I post it here hoping that we get inspiration for a new great project!

I am always amazed at the motivation the students show when it comes to space projects - whether they are planning corrrect diets for the astronauts or designing a durable building for a space colony - it allows me to cloak the curiculum with a motivating twist!

My use of Space Awareness and Astronomy has been limited mainly to any Transition Year classes I have had. Some of my students have completed projects on Space exploration like the effect of radiation on the mission to Mars or the general effect of space travel on the human body. I am hoping this course will improve my own knowledge of Space, so I can improve my teaching methodologies, and present the information in an more interesting way.

I use a free program called Stellarium for to show and to tell the history of the costellations.

I use also video, presentation multimedia with the photos of Hubble telescope and I organized a meeting with an expert of stargazing.

The students like activity of laboratory I divide the class in groups for to create a model of solar system with materials of recycle.

In addition the students show the model of solar system with some of the last news (website NASA, ESA) of universe.

Hello, I'm physic and nature teacher of 5 - 12 classes in Lithuania. Introduction to astronomy starts at 5 class there we speak about sun and telescopes (also I mention a astrophotography ) then at 6 class we speak about solar system and birth of solar system ( there I try to explain what we humans are part of universe ( I use article of Jonathan P. Williams "The Astrophysical Environment of the Solar Birthplace" ) and at this year we will create solar system from papje mase, and decorate from it a class. At 10 and 12 class we speak more about Solar system and universe (the movement of planets and stars, galaxies, universe, mater and anti mater, black holes). What I ont try yet, go to observatory to make a real sciencific observation (they doing it only using virtual observatorys Stellar)
Also at all this classes using a lot of video from youtube and movies of The Universe cycle. Childrens like lessons about universe and astronomy, because universe for them is something mystical, but also arouse curiosity. They like lessons about aliens and what we are real aliens in our planet, what we are unique.

I teach general Science to 12-15year olds (Junior Cycle) and Biology and Chemistry to 16-18 year olds (Senior Cycle). The new Junior Cycle syllabus for Science has introduced a section on Earth and Space. There will also be a Space Week running across the country in the first week of October to promote Space Sciences. Quite often Space is a topic that is somewhat lacking in the classroom I find, however it is becoming more prominent with all the media available to us now. Recently in my own classroom, a discussion on geotropism in plants presented the opportunity to discuss growing plants (food) in space - the curiosity it evoked was something else!

Being an ex-astrophysicist myself, I often use examples from my old experience in my physics lessons. Astronomy is no more really part of the Italian physics curriculum, but it still provides a fascinating XXX where you can create exercises for your students and
For instance, one possible way to introduce your students to Newton's first law (the law of inertia) to your students is the historical approach: you start with Galileo's pair of inclined planes and proceed reasoning about what would happen if the second plane had inclination zero. It cenrtainly works, and students will grasp the concept.
OR, you could start talking about the trip of Voyager 1. Tell them that the Voyager 1 spacecraft run out of fuel and stopped the engines more than 35 years ago. But it's still running away from the Sun, engines stopped, at a velocity of more than 60000 km/h.
Now, while both approach are reasonable, in my experience the last one bring complete silence in the classroom, awe and following excitement.
Space science is one of the best tool to raise the attention of your students and bring interest in what you are saying.

Hi! Space themes like the solar system are an integral part of the primary school curriculum in Greece and children find them really interesting. I would also like to teach them about the constellations, since their names are based on interesting myths and they can be distinguished in the night sky.

Hello! I'm a physics teacher in a secondary school from Ukraine. A brief course of Astronomy is a part of the National curricula for 17 - 18 y. o. students in my country. Also, I teach Natural Sciences for 10-11 y. o. students where a topic "The Universe" is included. The children study the Solar System, constellations, and general information about galaxies. This course gave me some new ideas about my teaching. My students just gain general knowledge about Space, and I've never focused on Space career. I think I should make a point of Space career for my students while teaching Astronomy.

Hi, I'm a chemistry teacher in an international school. I have taught units on space and the universe for students aged 12-16 and it is rich in areas to engage students. They love talking about space and questioning about the universe. I have also linked it into chemistry units, for example one on chemical reactions and the periodic table, we were looking at the discovery of the elements but we looked at how heavier elements are made from lighter ones in stars.

Teaching astronomy in under developped country is not easy at all. The responsibles look having another priorities, but introducing astronomy by doing science and make them understand the relationship with technology, culture and society is a good approach. Teaching to children is a good way to prepare the next generation for science since the actual adults may continue fight (no war) for surviving!

Hello everybody! I'm a Science teacher in a secondary school. I teach astronomy to 14 year students, now, while some years ago these topics were taught to older students, in their final year of the secondary school. So, now, to get started and fascinate younger students we always start from watching sky at night or during the day, but using specific app (Star walk, for example) to get information about planets, stars, galaxies and more, and to be able to recognize the main constellations and stars you can see without a with a telescope. Then, we visit an observatory to watch Sun and stars with a telescope. In the meantime we study more about this topics, using book, video, finding many connections with physics, chemistry, but also poetry, music and mithology.

Hi! I implemented Mission X: Train like an astronaut, an educational programm by ESA with goals regarding health, nutrition, exercise and science referring to space. I have also done other space related activities with my students and I continue to do so, celebrating this year's Space Week for example.

I'm a upper secondary school Maths teacher and space is not part of my students curriculum. I have some ideas about using space activities to engage my students during the math lesson without spending too much time. Elliptical orbits in Maths in conic sections, and Kepler and Newton Laws in Physics combined with solving equations, Eratosthenes expiriment about the similar triangles in geometry… Many ideas to improve my teaching as part of STEM in secondary education... realy fascinating and inspirational to an "old and experienced teacher" who need new activities not only for engaging my students but also for having good time me too!

Hi, I'm a secondary school teacher and I think that students need to be in classrooms that inspire them and filled with examples of work that they aspire to do. Students enjoy decorating their classes. I asked my students to realize some models of the solar system to promote and encourage an interest in Astronomy and Geophysics. To let them grasp the sheer vastness of the universe we read the article “Heavenly body on the fast line” published by Education Guardian on the October 20, 2010. It takes the reader on a journey through the solar system, past asteroids and comets, to consider the speed at which objects in space are travelling and also the consequences of cosmic collisions. I used the article as a starting point for research about the scale of man-made debris that’s littering outer space and the efforts of space agencies to ward off possible future collisions between asteroids and Earth. This reading was very interesting for the students.
