The great Galveston storm occured in September 8, 1900 when a hurricane with an estimated strength of Category 4 hit Galveston, Texas. This hurricane remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S history. More than 8.000 people were killed and 10.000 people were left homeless out of a total population of fewer than 34.000.
The storm was first detected on August 27 in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. On September 3, the storm directed to Cuba and moved on in a west-northwest direction. In the Gulf of Mexico the storm rapidly intensified. Although the citizens were being warned that the hurricane was approaching many ignored the warnings. On September 8 the hurricane destroyed Galveston which at the time was one of the most advanced cities in Texas. The hurricane had an estimated tidal surge of 15 feet (4,5 meters) while the barrier island of Galveston was reaching a 5 feet (1,5 meters) altitude. It struck without much warning as storm forecasting at the time were lacking the advanced technology needed to accurately predict such a disaster.
The citizens claim that even though they knew that a storm would occur, they had no idea that it would be so catastrophic. The hurricane affected the city for many years.

Two years ago, in August 2021 a terrible fire broke out. North Eboia was a green tourist attraction, full of life. But on Tuesday 3rd August the combination of climate change and heat resulted to a huge environmental disaster.

Firstly, small ranged fire broke out in Krieza, which was really controllable. Then, as a precaution, villages Retsinolakko and Kokkini were evacuated. After a while, another fire broke out and burned a lot of villages, such as Daphni and Spiada.

The next day eight villages were evacuated, because of the fire. On Wednesday, at night, fire was splitted in four parts with different directions each one.

On Thursday, the wind started blowing. As a result the four fiery fronts came into one, which was burning uncontrollably. All the villages near Eboia Lake and Agia Anna were evacuated. The only one recourse for the citizens was the sea.

During these days citizens of North Eboia were begging for help. There were not sufficient fire fighters. As a result the one third of forests in Eboia were burnt. In addition, a lot of people were burnt, while a great number of people were suffocated by CO2 emissions during fire. The property of the citizens suffered serious damages. Additionally, the ecological result was devastating, as a lot of trees and animals were burnt.

On 6 February 2023, a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The epicenter was 37 km west–northwest of Gaziantep. It was followed by a 7.7 earthquake. This earthquake was centered 95 km north-northeast from the first. There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.

The  7.8 earthquake is the largest in Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake of the same magnitude, and jointly the second-strongest recorded in the history of the country, after the 1668 North Anatolia earthquake. It is also one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the Levant. It was felt as far as Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and the Black Sea coast of Turkey. There were more than 10,000 aftershocks in the three weeks that followed. There was widespread damage in an area of about 350,000 km2. An estimated 14 million people, or 16 percent of Turkey's population, were affected. Development experts from the United Nations estimated that about 1.5 million people were left homeless. As of 13 March 2023, more than 55,700 deaths were confirmed: more than 48,400 in Turkey, and more than 7,200 in Syria.

The massive earthquakes that struck southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria on February 6 have not only caused death and destruction, but also deep trauma to the survivors.

Everything began on February 3, 2023, when the record-breaking tropical cyclone Freddy formed in the northeast of Australia. By that time, Freddy had traveled across the entire Indian Ocean and had become the first Category 5 storm.

First of all, Freddy crossed different cities like Madagascar, Mozambique, and Malawi, leaving behind a trace of devastation. As an example, Freddy caused severe flooding and landslides.

In Madagascar, people had already many problems such as food insecurity and an increase in child malnutrition and sadly for them, Freddy hit this area by destroying their homes. More than 40,000 people were affected by the storm and more than 14,000 were displaced. Eight of them were killed by Freddy.

In Mozambique, Freddy arrived in this area twice. When it first arrived, over 600,000 people were unlucky to suffer from the negative consequences of the storm, as local people said. Rainfall predictions reached up to 400mm causing flooding and dangerous landslides. In northern areas, Freddy has affected 1.75 million people. During his second arrival in March, the Mozambique National Meteorology predicted heavy rains that reached 500mm. Roughly 565,000 persons were at risk. Unfortunately, deaths have exceeded 200 people.

In Malawi, Freddy has caused great destruction. Not only were the buildings destroyed, but roads and bridges were cut down. Visibility in the area was completely absent. Eventually, the storm knocked out the electricity. There have been about 190 deaths.

People were shocked by what they witnessed. Somebody said he thought it was some kind of nightmare. They were so sad because they lost everything in such a little while. They said that this couldn't be true and they couldn't believe their eyes.

In conclusion, we have to say that Freddy left a lot of devastation behind him, from the buildings that were destroyed to the people they were killed. Fortunately, the rescue teams have saved so many lives.

TOHOKU EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI(by Iliana Maria Marouli)

On 11 March 2011 there was an undersea earthquake. The magnitude 9.0-9.1 earhtquake had an epicenter in the Pacific ocean 72 km east of the Oshika Peninsula of the Tohoku region. It lasted 6 minutes and caused a tsounami.
It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan and the forth most powerful earthquake in the world. The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves that may have reached heights of up to 40.5 meters. The waves travelled 700 km/h and up to 10 km inland. Residents of Tohoku region had only 8 to 10 minutes of warning. The official figures released in 2021 reported 19.759 deaths 6.242 injured and 2.553 people missing. A report from 2015 indicated 228.863 people were still leaving away from their home in either temporary housing or due to a permanent relocation. Early estimates plased insured losses from the earthquake alone at 14,5 to 34,6 billion US dollars. The world banks estimated economic cost was 235 billion US dollars.
Like the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami the damage by surging water was far more deadly and destructive than the actual quake. Entire towns were destroyed in tsunami hit areas in Japan. The tsunami cauzed the Fukushima nuclear disaster primarily the meltdowns of 3 of its reactors, the discharge of radioctive water in Fukushima and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundrents of thousants of residents. The tsunami affected all the Pacific even Mexico and Peru. The surge in Chile was large enough to damage more than 200 houses. The tsunami broke icebergs in Antarctica 13.000 km away. On the day of the earthquake several fjords in Norway started to boil and rise. As of April 2012 a wreckage from the tsunami spread around the world, including a Japanese motorcycle found in British Columbia Canada.
The aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami included both a humanitarian crisis and a mature economic impact. The tsunami resulted in over 340.000 displaced people in the Tohoku region and sortages of food, water, shelter, medicine and fuel for survivors. In February 2016 a memorial was inaugurated by two arcitects for the victims af the disaster. Many anti- nuclear protests followed the disaster.

But it's not just the power of the vibration that causes destruction.

The incident happened in the early hours of the morning, when the citizens were inside the apartments and sleeping.

The earthquake resulted in the deaths of at least 47,975 people in Turkey, over 1,400 in Syria and more than 4,500 in northwest Syria.

The last decade has seen several natural disasters, but one that stands out is the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.8, hit Nepal on April 25th, 2015, and caused widespread destruction across the country.

The earthquake's epicenter was located in the Gorkha district, which is about 50 miles northwest of the capital city, Kathmandu. The tremors were felt across the region, including in neighboring countries like India, China, and Bangladesh. The earthquake was the worst to hit Nepal in more than 80 years, and it left a trail of destruction in its wake.

The earthquake claimed the lives of over 8,000 people and injured more than 22,000 others. The number of casualties would have been much higher if the earthquake had struck during the day when more people were out and about. However, it hit just before noon, and many people were inside their homes.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to buildings, including ancient temples, and historic landmarks. The most affected area was the Kathmandu Valley, which is home to many UNESCO World Heritage sites. The earthquake destroyed many of these sites, including the Dharahara Tower, a nine-story tower that was a popular tourist attraction.

The events of that day left the people of Nepal in a state of shock and despair. Many people lost their homes and loved ones, and they were forced to live in makeshift tents and shelters. The country's infrastructure was severely damaged, and it took several months for aid to reach the affected areas.

The government and the international community launched a massive relief effort to help the people of Nepal. Aid workers from around the world rushed to the country to provide food, water, and medical supplies to those in need. The Nepalese people showed incredible resilience and strength in the face of adversity, and they worked tirelessly to rebuild their communities.

In conclusion, the earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 was a tragic event that had a profound impact on the country and its people. The disaster claimed thousands of lives, caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, and left many people homeless. However, the resilience and strength of the Nepalese people in the aftermath of the earthquake were truly inspiring. The international community came together to provide aid and support, and the people of Nepal continue to work towards rebuilding their communities and their lives.

On March 11, 2011, Japan experienced the strongest earthquake in its recorded history. The earthquake struck below the North Pacific, 130 kilometers (81 miles) east of Sendai, the largest city in the Tohoku region, a northern part of the island of Honshu.

The Tohoku earthquake caused a tsunami. A tsunami—Japanese for “harbor wave”—is a series of powerful waves caused by the displacement of a large body of water. Most tsunamis, like the one that formed off Tohoku, are triggered by underwater tectonic activity, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Tohoku tsunami produced waves up to 40 meters (132 feet) high, More than 450,000 people became homeless as a result of the tsunami. More than 15,500 people died. The tsunami also severely crippled the infrastructure of the country.

In addition to the thousands of destroyed homes, businesses, roads, and railways, the tsunami caused the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The Fukushima nuclear disaster released toxic, radioactive materials into the environment and forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes and businesses.

On Tuesday, January 12 2010, a 7-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti at 16:53, with its epicenter being the coastal town of Léogâne, 16 kilometres west of the capital Port-au-Prince. Undisputedly, the earthquake was one of the greatest disasters that the small Caribbean nation has faced in its history.

Totally, there are approximately 250,000 people killed after the earthquake itself, the multiple aftershocks that went on for at least twelve days and the tsunami that was recorded in the town of Petit Paradis. Proceeding to material casualties, 280,000 buildings (250,000 homes and 30,000 stores) were severely damaged by the catastrophe.

People were devastated from this unprecedented destruction. Almost all of them were pessimistic about their future, and not without reason, as the majority of the earthquake victims already lived under miserable conditions in slums, without even the basic goods. However, some of them still expressed reserved expectations, leaning on the humanitarian help.

The humanitarian aid was immense. Some nations sent medical personnel such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and rescue specialists. Others detached relief packages including food, water and other lifesaving supplies. Many humanitarian organizations and agencies provided basic necessities such as blankets, beds and tents. Countries that could not send material help consigned donations. Artists donated their earnings from concert and exhibitions and children sent their savings.

All this huge humanitarian help proved that beyond these major disasters there is always hope. Hope that derives from people helping each other and efforts put together for building residencies that fully satisfy the required seismic reliability.

Lefteris K

The natural disaster that I am going to talk about is the Kashmir Earthquake. This serious event happened on October 8, 2005 and caused a lot of problems in both people and economy. But, what really happened?

This disastrous earthquake struck the Kashmir region, a place in Pakistan. The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 7,6. The relief effort for the survivors was extremely difficult because of the high number of aftershocks and falling rocks. The seriousness of the damage and the huge number of dead people were worsened by poor construction in affected areas. In Kashmir, at least 79.000 people died and more than 32.000 buildings were collapsed.

This tragedy had an impact on people’s feelings. For those who managed to survive, they had to try and work through it. For sure, they might have psychological problems and they might have been more depressed because they lost their family and fiends. This was something that no one wants to be repeated, but it is a physical phenomenon and we will have to be ready to beat it!

The natural disaster I chose to talk about is the earthquake that happened in Kashmir (Pakistan) on the 8th of October in 2005. This earthquake had some serious consequences, but there are some significant details that are needed a look.
The earthquake took place on the 8th of October in 2005 and specifically at 08:50:09 local time. The earthquake's center was Kashmir city in Pakistan , but the earthquake also affected deeply Bakalot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and some areas near Kashmir too. The earthquake was felt in regions such as India, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Xinjiang. The earthquake caused extensive destruction. In some places, whole sections of towns slid off cliffs and entire families were killed. The Muzaffarabad area suffered severe devastation, and the town of Balakot in the North-West Frontier Province was almost completely destroyed. The quake occurred just before the onset of the region’s harsh winter, exacerbating the disaster’s effects. In addition, landslides wiped out large numbers of the region’s roads, making many of the damaged areas inaccessible to relief workers in the immediate aftermath.

It is calculated that, around 86.000 people died that day, a similar number of people was injured and around 4 million citizens ended up homeless and displaced in streets. It was extremely difficult to survive that exact moment due to the enormous number of falling rocks leading to some major aftermath.

A tragedy like that must have had a significant effect in people's psychology and life afterwards. For the survivors, who might have lost their friends or some family member , it must've been very hard to settle down and try having a normal life again. Most people may have felt into depression for months or even years but surely every survivor was very sad for everything that had happened.

An earthquake like that is a physical disaster that people cannot prevent or stop when happening. But people, the world over, need to be ready to get through a situation like that in the future and overcome difficulties such this.

Anna-Maria Tentolouri

One the most devastating and deadliest hurricanes to ever hit the US was the category 5 Atlantic Hurricane named Katrina.

Katrina originated on August 23rd 2005 in the Bahamas and it started out as a tropical wave. Early the following day it strengthened into a tropical storm. Two days after its formation, on August 25th, it hit Florida as a stage 1 hurricane. The next day on August 26th Katrina entered the Gulf of Mexico and rapidly intensified into a stage 5 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf, before weakening into a stage 3 hurricane which hit the areas of Mississippi and Louisiana on August 29th. The leftovers of Katrina then died over the Great Lakes on August 31st.

The majority of the loss of lives during the hurricane was due to flooding caused by fatal engineering flaws in the flood protection system, specifically the levee around the city of New Orleans. Eventually, 80% of the city of New Orleans, along with other large areas in neighboring parishes, were flooded for weeks. The fatalities of this hurricane are estimated to be 1,392 in total while another 135 people remain categorized as missing in Louisiana today. Lastly, the damage Katrina caused was worth an enormous amount of 108 billion USD and that’s why it is considered the most damaging hurricane in today’s history.

What the people witnessed at that time must have been extremely traumatic. So many people lost their loved ones and watched their homes, properties and lives get knocked down by that storm. It may not have lasted a long time, however the consequences to these people’s lives were gigantic and will not be forgotten.
