in their cells that were just big enough for them to get through.

Fooling the guards

After the escapees had dug their holes, they had to figure out a way to fool everyone into thinking they were still there so they made fake heads. So they crafted dummy heads made out of soap, toilet paper and their hair so they could trick the guards on June 11, 1962.

Investigation

The next morning police searched for the escapees on Alcatraz and Angel Island and found nothing. The FBI started an investigation as well. All they had found were remains of the raft, paddles, and a bag containing personal items on Angel Island. It was concluded that the prisoners drowned in the cold waters of the bay while trying to reach the mainland. Picture of the raft that the inmates had made.

Man Left Behind

On the night of the escape John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris had successfully escaped their cells, but Allen West had failed to fit through the hole in his cell so he was left behind as the other three carried out the escape.

Masterminds Behind the Escape

Frank Morris: On January 3, 1960 Frank Lee Morris was sent to Alcatraz where he had become prisoner AZ1441. With an IQ of 133 (more then 98% of people) Frank Morris could easily figure out how to escape Alcatraz. By May, 1962 he was finished digging through his vent into the next room and was ready for escape. On June 11, 1962 he had placed his dummy on the bed and escaped through the vent in their cell to a utility corridor.

Allen West: Was sent to the Atlanta Penitentiary (where he first met Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin) and Florida State Prison for carjacking. He was sent to Alcatraz in 1957, charged with attempting escape and became prisoner AZ1335. When they were building their plan, West and all of his partners had a workshop above their cell row. So when West was cleaning above their cell row he had asked prison guards if he could cover the area with blanket. He had lied that the area was extremely dust and dust was falling down to the prison floor below them. He had actually used the blankets to cover their workshop area containing all of their items such as stolen tools, the lifelike dummies, and the life raft.
