It was eye opening to be called a gringo when living in spanish country. The motoconcho guys were always lined up on my walk to work and would yell out and hiss at you, it was pretty intimidating. I would say I felt pretty isolated and scared, especially if there wasn't any other people who looked like me around

Yes I have experienced discrimination due to a learning disability called Dyslexia. When I went to school my teachers felt that I lacked concentration and intelligence and I struggled to prove that I had amazing abilities and I could do a lot that others couldn’t . A career advisor at school suggested that maybe I should just get married and have a family as it would be the best thing for me . I ventured into university but found it difficult to present essays to the expected level. After rethinking about my carrer path moved into a different area and I was extremely successful and worked and travel with an amazing company for 15 years. I still to this day have people question my abilities due to the fact that I am unable to spell or read very well and I become upset and frustrated by this still.. however times are changing and things are getting better and better for kids with dyslexia. I was judged on my learning ability within a set environment and for not fitting into the normal acceptable mold. However I’m pleased that I’m not one from a normal mold now.

My partner is Samoan. We were at a restaurant and the waiter asked if we could pay for our dinner before we had even ordered. He was worried that my partner would not have enough money. It was an awful thing to watch and I was so upset. My partner just shrugged and said ' don't worry that has happened all my life' needless to say we did not stay at the restaurant!

I have never experienced discrimination because of my race because I am a white person living in a "white" world. I am trying to be aware of my own thoughts. Discrimination can happen in thoughts like "That must be a woman driving/ an Asian driving".
I have experienced discrimination because I am a woman when I started working. A question I was asked: Are you intending to have children? I think this type of discrimination is slowly changing; there are however still a lot less female CEOs than males.

I remember being told that my opinion on issues of feminism was irrelevant because I was a man. I remember being really upset by this because the person telling me was someone I have a lot of respect for and I was hurt that they would disregard my views for reasons that I was powerless to change. Over time I was able to process what she meant and understand the point she was making but I still remember the feeling of powerlessness. I think POWER and the restriction of power is what discrimination is all about.

I'm a pakeha male and when I ordered a Poke Bowl for lunch one day, the person that served it to me apologised when he (a Malaysian person) brought it out as it only had chopsticks with it. He then insisted on getting a knife and fork so I could eat it. I said; no worries chopsticks are perfectly fine. Anyway he insisted and by the time he had come back I was halfway through eating it with the chopsticks!! I thought to myself; imagine if that was the other way around, people would suggest I was discriminating by race.

I think we have to be careful what we call discrimination. While of course there are legitimate cases, sometimes actions or words that can make people feel discriminated against or offended by aren't intended that way at all. For example, when I was a teenager (I am a female), a friend who was a guy offered to carry my bag was responded to with a snappy "I can carry my own bag thank you" comment from me as I thought he was referring to me being weak as a female. Fortunately, he called me out on it and helped me understand he was trying to be helpful and chivalrous.
