I think some hands-on tutorial sessions offered to the community would be helpful in explaining our continued use of Canvas and other technologies. I continue to hear things like: "I'm not good at technology.", "We don't have a computer at home.", "I couldn't login so I gave up." It becomes frustrating.

This is something I plan on doing a lot with this year. I was really surprised what my students didn't know about using the internet and online tools when we used them last year. This year I intend to front load the technology so that we can move forward quickly and more efficiently.

Talking about digital citizenship with our students is very important, and I find the best way to engage them in the conversation is to listen to their beliefs, concerns, and experiences in their digital world and to build lessons based on what they are dealing with. There are some great lesson plan ideas at commonsensemedia.org to incorporate digital citizenship in the classroom.

We need to switch our vision. Most of student projects happen in the small casem of a classroom. As a corporation we should have more social feeds addressing projects amongst the schools. For example: 8th graders at Kahler working with 8th graders at Clark and Grimmer to create a Digital Hero Comic Book - or - 7th graders help write a fictional story in Google Slides with 4th graders. Perhaps there could an online project with the St. John Township Food Pantry to help expand their mission with our own. As more employers and various educational institutions check social media sites; it is critical to have highlights of digital programs within our school network that have demonstrated positive, digital applications. These teachable moments of appropriate digital decision-making are frequent either online or in-person. Let’s give the students a chance to see theri project can shine outside the confines of their classroom.

I introduce or review some of the technology tools that we use (canvas, skyward, e-mail) very early in the school year. I also insist that students check their accounts at least once a week. This way they get used to using the technology and see different ways that it can help keep them organized during the school year.

I think we should offer technology sessions throughout the school year to help parents feel more comfortable using our technology. Many times I hear parents tell me that they do not know how to access canvas or skyward. Often, I hear this from parents who are new to the district later in the school year. I think if there were an information session that they could attend and practice with the technology, they would be more likely to use it,
