I will present 2 significant areas. Firstly, school nurses may be the only health-care provider a student sees, so s/he can play a vital role in first noticing signs/symptoms of a medical condition and can make the appropriate referrals for the student to get the proper care. For example, a nurse may listen to a student's lung sounds after they come in complaining of difficulty breathing. S/he can inform the parent of the abnormal breath sounds and recommend follow-up with a pediatrician. The pediatrician may diagnose the student with asthma and prescribe an inhaler. This is all because the nurse used the nursing process to assess and evaluate this student's health needs.
Secondly, a school nurse is often the first person students go to during stressful periods in their lives to discuss challenging relationships with their classmates and/or at home. The school nurse can provide a listening ear and help the students by providing tips on how to communicate his/her needs and boundaries to friends and family. For example, if a friend is constantly in her personal space, the school nurse can provide tips on how to communicate to her friend in a respectful manner. If they learn healthy communication skills and boundary setting when they are young, students/children will be able to carry it over into their adulthood. These skills are vital in all areas of life, including personal and professional relationships. In my opinion, the biggest impact is that without school nurses, the students who are medically fragile simply could not attend school like all the other children. For those of us who have students with G-Tubes, Trachs, catheters, even diabetes, if there was no school nurse, nobody would be ablel to train, assess and plan for students who have complicated health issues to be there.

If I or another nurses was not there, who knows if those student who have had the proper care and treatment in a timely manner.
