Where Josh is speaking on behalf of the 2nd 15 Rugby team. Josh is trying to happily explain the tough 57-3 loss and saying that everyone did well, while all the white boys call him a boon and start laughing at him

R: The family's in a bit of a tight spot, currently. Josh's mum's barely making it by as a cleaner for the school he goes to, and they do paper runs at multiple points of the film - potentially indicating that extra job assists with their day-to-day living. And just as a little cherry on-top, they've also lost the father of their group not too long ago.

R: Now, while the 'Argument' scene I've chosen is FAR past this particular intro-point of the film, it still showcases the struggles in full-swing - especially with the mother, nearly breaking down about the loss of her husband, and the daily struggle she's been left with.

His father died when he was young, his older brother Jamie injured his leg badly whilst playing rugby, and his mum Shirley works as a paper runner and a cleaner for St Gilberts School for Men. If Jamie's rugby legacy at St Gildert's didn't exist, Shirley would have an even harder time raising her two boys.

He stopped him after class and said that he was starting a small drama club and offered him to join in.

Like the many relationships in the film, it's... Complicated. While they both are able to chat pretty 'unleashed' without usually offending the other, they have their moments of disconnection and drama. But, despite this, they're still able to come around and pick up the pieces.

One of the first scenes we get depicting this complexity is the (I think) the second Paper-Run scene, where Josh mention she's still 'on-trial' when she decides she'll leave on the next street. While this may be a bit a jokey scene, it still shows the mixed feelings of the relationship overall.

Josh is inspired to believe in himself, his beliefs and values after going to the protest and seeing how badly treated the Maori and Polynesian people were. He was particularly inspired by Samantha and how proud she was about her heritage and culture.
