In the beginning of the necklace, the character of Mme. Loisel is introduced. Mme. Loisel is a woman of the poorer class who longs for a life of luxury. Despite her class, Mme. Loisel believes that she is born to enjoy the niceties of life. She constantly grieves over her humble lifestyle and dreams of the life of an aristocrat. The rising action of the story begins when her husband brings home an invitation to a party at the Ministerial Mansion.

"She dressed finely because she could not afford any clothes, but she was unhappy as a woman who has come down in the world; for women have no rank or social class."(pg.199) This is significant because it shows that Mme. Loisel is not a wealthy lady but longs to be. Her need to dress elegant and and seem rich is what leads her to borrow her friend's necklace. If Mme. Loisel would've never borrowed her friend's necklace she wouldn't have had any problem. It is then after the party that she loses her necklace because she does not want the wealthier men and women to see her wearing her husband's shabby shawl.
