Each Caribbean territory has its own musical genre that tends to reflect the culture and lifestyle of that territory.
Some examples of this are:

Antigua- Benna- This music type is deeply rooted in African rhythms where former African slaves brought their own music and sang certain songs that help them to remember their homeland and thus benna music dulled the panes of plantation life.

Barbados- Spouge- Spouge was created in the 1960’s by infusing Jamaica’s Ska and Trinidad’s Calypso. Spouge is a hybrid music since it borrows from other music forms.

Jamaica- Ska and Reggae-
Ska- Ska originated in the late 1950’s and it was the predecessor to Reggae and Rock-steady. Ska infused American Jazz into it.

Reggae- Developed in the 1960’s and was strongly linked to the Rastafari movement and was mainly popularised by Bob Marley.

Trinidad and Tobago- Soca, Calypso and Chutney-
Soca- This music type emerged when Calypsonian Lord Shorty began experimenting with East Indian rhythms therefore Soca had its roots in Calypso as well as traditional East Indian music.

Calypso- This is mainly African in origin and it is sung to highlight social inequalities and also poke fun at politicians.

Chutney- Originally sung by East Indian indentured workers on sugar estates and wedding houses, traditional folk songs were infused with modern instruments to form a new music type called Chutney.

However, due to the changing lifestyles and cultures of Caribbean people, our music has changed as well and as some would say, in a negative way.

For example, in Trinidad and Tobago's music Soca is now promoting a very sexual lifestyle and this does not send a very positive message to the youth. Chutney now promotes a lifestyle of drinking and partying and Calypso has also changed in a similar manner.

The upper class of society now frown upon these types of music and believe them to be vulgar and of no positive value.

With the westernisation of the Caribbean region now, many of these local Caribbean foods are slowly being phased out as our culture is gradually being replaced by that of North America and hence people would rather eat American foods. The sheer amount of American fast food franchises available in the Caribbean does not help this. KFC, McDonalds, Papa Johns are some examples.

As time went by, I realized how much of the work still applied to everyday life and I still experienced some of the issues spoken about. After that I became interested and now believe that all students of tertiary education in the Caribbean should engage in this course and learn all about our origins.
