Traditional Japanese homes are usually made of wood and are supported by pillars which are also made of wood. Modern homes usually have Western-style homes and are instead constructed by steel pillars. It is becoming more common for families to live in ferroconcrete apartment buildings in larger urban areas. Shoes are not worn in Western homes in attempt to keep the floors clean. One room inside the house is normally designed in a Japanese style with a tatami floor. The entrance, or genkan, serves as a place for putting on and removing one's shoes. Slippers are very common for the Japanese to wear inside their homes.

The history of Japanese cultural music transcends way back in history. Chinese music was imported to Japan, but then it was turned and formed to fit the Japanese cultural traits and needs. A few significant instruments in the culture include the Shamisen, Koto, and the Shakuhachi. The Shamisen is closely resembled to the guitar, as it has a rectangular body covered in skin and three strings. The Shakuhachi is a flute-like instrument made of bamboo, with multiple holes in the front and back that have different pitches and tones. The Koto in particular is significant to Japanese culture and is estimated to have been invented the 5 B.C, and it contains 12 to 13 strings in a curved arch played wth a pick.

The Shuriken is well known by American cartoons and samurai, as it is recognized by its star like blades. They are flat, sharp, and extremely dangerous pieces of steel thrown and aimed. Another well known blade is the Katani, a curved blade that was formed from Japanese blacksmiths who continuously heated, curved, and sharpened the blade. It has earned and received the title of the “soul of the samurai.” Both weapons are not seen for their history in Japanese culture, but rather how they show up in movies or cartoons. They are often stereotyped for this reason.

The Japanese culture also has interesting customs such as that blowing your nose in public is considered rude or insulting. Also, slurping on noodles is extremely polite and shows the people around that you have enjoyed your meal.
