Cinzia
Today I’ve learnt about the power of music to unite people coming from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
We went to a Creole garden where some talented drummers showed us how to play, sing and dance the Gwo-Ka.
There are 7 Rhythms of Gwo-Ka: Toumblack, Graj, Mende, Padjambel, Kalandja, Woulé, Lewoz.
Each rhythm determines a mood, a philosophy, an event. The 7 rhythms are the heritage of the Guadeloupe Island, and they are classified as a Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
I enjoyed playing and singing a lot!
I also enjoyed the wonderful scenery made of fruit trees (banana, coconut, cherry, papaja ,…), gorgeous flowers (heliconias,…) and tropical plants.
I can only say: “I see trees of green, red roses, too,/ I see them bloom, for me and you/And I think to myself/ What a wonderful world.” (L.A.)

Today I experienced how music can connect people coming from different cultures and speaking different languages which don't know each other. It's a beautiful way to get connected with each other without even noticing the language barrier and cultural differences. Music is a wonderful language. I definitely will try to connect my students which come from different countries and don't speak German yet through music. I am convinced that this will help them build friendships and get a little bit closer to each other even without having a language in common.
We got deeper into the culture of Guadeloupe today and I learnt how important music and rhythm is to the people in Guadeloupe and to their souls. It's their way of life, not just music.
I am really thankful for this beautiful experience today.

Today we got wonderful impressions on the nature of Guadeloupe, especially the plants. And we got a very insightful impression of the different rhythms in the Guadeloupian music. We heard Gwoka is found among all ethnical and religious groups of the Guadeloupean society. It combines responsive singing in Guadeloupean Creole, rhythms played on the Ka drums and dancing. We tried to drum the 7 different Rhytms like Toumblac, Graj, Lewoz, Woule, Kaladja,Padjjambel an Mende. For some it was very hard work, but we had a lot of fun and got a good sense of belonging to our community. Great day.

It was a wonderful day in the Creole garden. Nature was beautiful. It was the first time in my life, that I saw so many species of exotic plants: a tree on which avocado, mango grows. I got to know a fruit that treats cancer and another one with very hard grains that are used in instruments. I learned how to grow bananas - first planted in the ground, how flowers look, where the fruit arises and what is done to make the banana fruit grow. I ate cocoanut, drank fresh cocoa water and cane juice. However, my favorite tree is cocoa. I met people who lead a completely different way of life than me, who have time for living. I understood how stressed I am and how I run in my life, maybe not noticing what is really important.

I also had the opportunity to get to know Gwo Ka's music. Our team of teachers learnt the elements of the drums’ play and did it quite well. Music – Gwo Ka brought us together.

Annett Session 3

What did I learn today? ... The correct question is, what have I experienced and felt today?
No matter what language we speak, no matter where we come from - with music and dance we can all communicate. Music has always played an important role in human society. Culture and tradition are intertwined. Music and dance reflect the traditions of peoples.
While in Germany it is the old folk songs that tell of the lives and work of the people, in Guadeloupe it is the Gwo Ka drums that "tell" about the history and life of the people of Guadeloupe.
Although we all do not come from Guadeloupe, we were able to feel the history of the people here with the help of the Gwo Ka drums.

We were able to experience this wonderful experience in the middle of a tropical garden. Many of the fruits we buy at home we saw here "live on the tree".

The life of the people here follows a certain rhythm.
So is our life, but the rhythm is much faster.
Some questions arise, e.g. is all the headmaster says to achieve more efficiency in the rhythm of the students?
Or is it better to listen to your inner voice? How do students from different nations feel the rhythm?
How can I connect my students through music?
For the last 4 questions we have received answers today.

Thank you very much for this wonderful day!

Music is wonderful! In a very emotional way it creates a feeling of both identity and togetherness. It can also be a means of communication for people who don’t speak each other’s language and can often express feeling and emotions better than words can.

The drum session together with the richness of a creole garden was a wonderful experience.
