The lack of diversity in the Art Canon stems from many different factors: the subjectivity of what critics consider to be "good" music and do to the personal bias and beliefs of many in the music community, specifically when regarding minorities or those of non-western background. The reductionist process in understanding what makes music "good," excludes and marginalizes groups that don't fit the narrow window in which critics value, which therefore reduces the human capacity for understanding and enjoying different types of music. Without diversity, music will be unable to evolve past the divided art canons. A lack of diversity in the composers and players of music also reduces the human capacity in regards to music, because without the presence of minority composers and players, the musical world stagnates and the musical world loses the attention of minorities-- in turn leading to its ultimate extinction. Different cultures and minorities add many different flavors to a seemingly tasteless musical world-- such as through the evolution of jazz during the Harlem renaissance-- and without this musical diversity, the Western canon will never change.
