For my character, I decided to pick Walter. I decided to pick him because he was a big character throughout the whole book. He had a lot of up and downs throughout the book. From him being an alcoholic, finding out he is having a kid, loosing all of his money to try and open a liquor store; his life has been rough. But at the end of the book, he really did step up and change when he bought a house for everyone to live.

A character trait that describes him very good, is that he is untrustworthy. He is untrustworthy because he is an alcoholic, so when he finds out important information, he just leaves. Usually when he leaves, he will be at a bar.
Quote: "Willy!...Willy!...don't do it...Please don't do it...Man, not with that money...Man, not with that money please. Oh, God. Don't let it be true. Man, I trusted you, I put my life in your hands. Man. That money is made out of my father's flesh." pg. 128
Explanation: This means that when Mama gave him the money, and to spend it wisely, he did the complete opposite. He lost all of the money, even the money that was for his sister, over a liquor store. This is a reason why he is untrustworthy because he never makes the right decision.

Another character trait that describes him well, is selfish. He is selfish because he doesn't really care about anything important. He just cares about drinking. When he found out he was going to be a dad, he just left. He didn't care about how him leaving might effect Ruth. He just did what he wanted.
Quote:
Walter-"I'm going out!"
Ruth-"Where?"
Walter-"Just out of this house somewhere-"
Ruth-"I'll come."
Walter-"I don't want you to come."
Ruth-"I got something to talk to you about, Walter."
Walter-"That's too bad."
Explanation: This quote shows how Walter is selfish. When he gets bad news, or doesn't feel like dealing with something, he just leaves. Which is not right for him to do. When Ruth was going to talk to him about her being pregnant, he should of stayed and listen to her. Instead though, he left because it was too much for him.

I feel bad for Walter sometimes. For the most part though, I don't. It's his choice to make the decisions that he does, and half of the time, they aren't the best choices. For example, when he found out he was having another child, instead of being their for Ruth, he decided to leave because of his anger. As Walter's character evolves more and more throughout the book, you can start to see him change, but I think he is, just to please everyone. One of his strengths throughout the book, is that he knows what he wants. From the beginning of the book, till the end, he wanted to open a liquor store. But when he faced obstacles with that, he knew what he should do with some of the money left. A weakness that he has, is that he doesn't know how to deal with situations. When he is faced with something, he just leaves. He needs to be better at being their for his loved ones.

When looking at this picture, it is of a person. The things that are behind the person look like bottles and glasses of alcohol. I picked this picture because Walter was an alcoholic. Alcohol came before many other things that were important. This picture shows how someones life can be taken over one small thing. For Walter, that thing is alcohol.

Like Walter, he fixed his problems when he lost the money. He bought everyone a house, so they could have a better life. Which is the right thing to do.

This part of the song really stood out to me. It reminded of Walter when he lost all of the money, but try to make it up to everyone by buying them the house. He felt bad what he did, and it was hard for him to say sorry. He did though when he bought them their house.

Theme: Redemption
This theme, Redemption, fits perfectly for "A Raisin In The Sun." It fits perfectly because Walter did redeem himself, especially at the end of the book. He went through a lot. He found out he was going to be a father again, he started to drink more heavily, and he lost all of his money for a liquor store that he won't be able to get. A quote that represents this is, "True redemption is...when guilt leads to good." The theme redemption can relate to this because if you feel bad enough about something, and you want to make things better, you will fix it. Just like Walter did.

Theme: Suffering
The theme suffering can relate to the movie Fences. This theme can relate to the movie because the main character Troy, has a love-hate relationship with his son Cory. A situation that shows this is when Troy won't let Cory play football for college. He was supposed to have scouts come and talk to Troy and Rose about him playing in college, but Troy stopped them from coming. He stopped the scouts from coming to talk to him because he doesn't want the same thing to happened to Cory, that happened to him. Troy never was a famous baseball player, but if he wanted a couple more years he could of been. Troy just doesn't want Cory to go through the same headache that he went through when his dreams were crushed. This situation supports the theme because if Cory was allowed to play football, and did't make it "big", he would of dealt with the suffering that would of went into that. Cory did suffer with a lot of things. He had to deal with his dad being hard on him 24/7, he got kicked out of his house because he stood up to his dad, and he couldn't follow his dreams on playing football in college.

The two plays A Raisin In The Sun, and Fences are very similar. There characters are very similar, and so are their themes. For example, Walter in A Raisin In The Sun, and Troy in Fences are very alike. They both are alcoholics. Every time they get bad news, or something goes wrong, they always drink. They drink so much because they think it will make the pain go away or make things better, but it doesn't. The difference between two characters in both plays, are Ruth and Rose. Ruth is strict with Walter, but not as much as Rose is to Troy. Rose doesn't let Walter talk to her any certain way, or if he does, she corrects him. Even though he did sleep with another women, she was still strong, and stayed with him. Ruth on the other hand, doesn't let Walter be rude to her, but he still is because she isn't that hard on him. In my opinion, I think if she was harder on Walter, he would most likely make the right decisions.
To add to that, there themes are really not that similar, but they can be in a way. The theme that fit for A Raisin In The Sun was Redemption. This fit the play well especially at the end of the book. He went through a lot. He found out he was going to be a father again, he started to drink more heavily, and he lost all of his money for a liquor store that he won't be able to get. It is a little similar to Fences, but Troy really never got to redeem himself. When his child was born from the women he cheated on Rose with, he got worse. He started to drink more, and when Cory stood up to him, Troy kicked him out of the house. The theme that fit perfectly for Fences was suffering because Troy caused Rose and Cory to suffer a lot with what he put them through. It wasn't right for Troy to be an alcoholic and take things out on him, but if he really knew how they felt, he wouldn't of done it. This is similar with A Raisin In The Sun because Walter did cause his family to feel suffering too because of how he acted. He gets upset with things easily, and he needs to learn to just talk it out, instead of leaving to go to a bar. These two plays were really similar.
