A form of agriculture where one type of crop is planted intensely which is prone to problems.

Monoculture creates an insect buffet and perfect host conditions for disease to explode wiping out crops. Because monoculture is so vulnerable to pests and disease chemical pesticides are used heavily.
Planting the same crop over and over also depletes soil of the specific nutrients the plants need which make this form of agriculture reliant on chemical fertilizers and soil amendments.

Processing plants, especially poultry processing, are known for harsh working conditions, long hours with repetitive tasks that lead to work related injuries. A recent article exposed working conditions that drove chicken factory workers to wear diapers at work. During the COVID 19 outbreak such factories were known as super spreading sites where workers safety had not been prioritized over profits.

The book "Working in the Shadows" offers a glimpse into poultry plants where workers are charged for job necessities like gloves, hairnets and aprons. These factories take advantage of undocumented workers and workers with criminal records who may fear reporting problems and may have few other work opportunities. These factories cooperate with ICE leaving workers fearing speaking out.

Processed foods are also called value added products because profits will increase for business when foods are processed versus sold whole. By preserving the shelf life with chemical additives, sugars and salts profits are maximized while health is sacrificed. The more profitable a product is the more a business will advertise leaving consumers targeted with ads for highly processed foods promising convenience and comfort.

Low income communities of color both urban and rural face food imbalances where there may be a lack of access to fresh affordable "nutrient dense" foods AND over abundance of processed foods, fast foods and corner stores offering empty calories. Farmers markets, healthy vendors and organic grocers seem to popup in wealthier communities while Krispy Krunchy chicken fills the gaps in low income areas. This contributes to health disparities where rates for diet related diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease are much higher in low income communities of color. Some people call this situation "food apartheid" referring to the system of racial segregation in South Africa known as apartheid.
