Hello! My name is Julieta but most people call me Julie. This is my second year at CSU Stan as a LIBS major. I am 18 years old and plan on becoming an elementary school teacher. I am a full-time student here at Stan but I also help my mom run her cupcake truck. I have a crazy energetic Husky named Fiona she is one year old and keeps me busy! I also have a calm and adorable cat named Vada. In my free time, I am a cake decorator, I love to read, hike, eat, travel, and experience new things! One of my favorite places to go is where my family is from, Jalostotitlan, Jalisco, Mexico. The reason I love to go is because of my family, the food, and the sights. This summer was one of my favorites, I rode a hot air balloon in Napa Valley, got to visit Tequila, got to stay in a barrica (barrel the ones behind me in the photo), I went to Puerto Vallarta, and then my hometown Jalos. Before Covid that was how I spent most of my summers experiencing new places and things, I was blessed enough to experience this once again this summer. I am excited to get to know my peers and instructors even if it is online, I am hoping for a good semester!

When I think about sustainability I think about the plant. It makes me think about trying to sustain planet earth and avoiding the depletion of natural recourses. What I do to try and incorporate sustainability in my life is recycle, try not to waste resources, I bought a fuel-efficient car, turn lights off, try to use the less plastic possible, and I am working towards one day becoming a vegetarian or vegan. Although the planet is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of sustainability it also means maintaining a certain level or pace. I think sustainability is important when attending school, having a job, or even both. It is easy to get overwhelmed or burnt out, so sustainability is especially important to us students.

Information literacy is the ability to find resources or information. Everyone has a different level of information literacy, some have an easier time while others struggle more searching for information. I still need more practice on my information literacy. The past year at CSU Stan I have majorly improved with the help of some of my instructors, certain courses, and the resources provided to students here at Stan. Some of the resources provided by CSU Stan to students in order to improve our information literacy are the library, the librarians, and search bases.

Topic Proposal

My topic proposal is how companies are mostly to blame for pollution, depletion of natural resources, and climate change. This topic falls under the pillar of economic sustainability. The people involved in this topic are companies, CEO's, politicians, and activists. The reason why is because the companies and CEO's are at fault for the damage their company is inflicting on planet earth. Politicians are also at blame because they should push for stricter laws concerning the environment and pollution, therefore not allowing companies to cause so much damage. Activists are also involved in this topic proposal because they fight and push for stricter laws concerning the companies and the damage they cause. My topic is located mostly here in the United States but also includes other countries and their laws enforcing sustainability on companies. This topic is developed by companies being greedy and trying to save themselves the most money they can, not caring that it is at the expense of Earth and our quality of life. The government can help make changes by making laws forcing companies to become more sustainable, and less damaging to the planet, our resources, animals, and quality of life. My research is important because companies are the ones most at fault and responsible for the pollution, they are responsible for 71% of global emissions. This research is important to me because as an individual who tries to be sustainable and do the best I can to not harm this Earth, I feel as if my efforts fall on deaf ears. Because although I try to do the best I can, I can not control how much companies are damaging planet earth. I hope to learn how individuals and activists can push our politicians and government to enforce stricter laws on companies. A question I have is what are some ideas you have that can make our government push for stricter polluting laws on these companies?

For my blog post this week I decided to read and analyze the article "Everyone is Tired of Always Staying Silent", by Julia Lurie. In the article, Julia Lurie is telling the story of Veronica Perez, a farmworker in Kern County California fighting for better work conditions and treatment of workers in agriculture. Veronica works at Primex Farms, a California nut-processing plant. At Primex Farms Veronica explains that they did not take the proper steps and precautions for Covid 19, therefore putting employees at risk. At Primex, they didn't allow employees to wear masks until employees requested the right for it and in April they finally allowed it. The company then began selling masks at $8 each according to Veronica and several other employees. When employees began to get sick they had to stay home with no pay, people began coming into work sick to avoid not getting paid. According to another Primex Farms employee he informed his manager he wasn't feeling well but his manager encouraged him to continue working. Employees say that they encouraged them to continue working and if they had to stay home other employees were not informed. The author also goes into the history of immigrant farmworkers and their fight for fair work treatment.

In the article, the author used pathos as a rhetorical appeal. Pathos is appealing to the emotions and feelings of the audience. Julia Lurie uses pathos in her article by telling the story of these immigrant farmworkers and the unfair treatment that they receive, she also uses history and photos to appeal to the audience's emotions. All of this article evoked my emotions but especially Veronica Perez's story about how in the past she got hurt at an almond packing plant she was employed at and was fired. She goes on to say that “They use you until you can’t give any more of you—and once you have a problem, they’ll get rid of you like you’re nothing,” (Lurie, 2021). This story really pulls at my heartstrings because Veronica is an immigrant single mother of three. By using these stories the author evokes the emotions of the readers and it helps get her point across that companies are mistreating employees and turning a blind eye to their employees and their health.

The information Julia Lurie presents has a great deal of value. She writes about the poor treatment of workers in the farming industry and attempts to raise awareness of it. Lurie uses the true stories of immigrant farmworkers as well as dives into the past of farmworkers and their fight/journey for better work conditions and treatment. What she presents us with is information with lots of importance and with that raises awareness.

Are there mental evaluations before purchasing a gun? How quickly can you purchase a gun? How did the people who have committed mass shootings or gun violence, in general, get the firearm? What are some precautions we can take when selling firearms that can help prevent gun violence?

Also, I used strong keywords.

How did you select the sources that you decided to read: I selected the sources I decided to read by looking at the abstract and getting a preview, then I skimmed through looking to see if it was something I might be able to use in my research project.

What questions do you still have about searching?: I don’t have any questions I just feel like the more I do it the better I get. Also, the lectures were very helpful!

It would have been helpful if they listed the states.

While doing my research on the Stanislaus State University library website I used the chat services they offer with a librarian. The librarian was super helpful she asked me what I was looking for, and gave me tips on what to search for. She also helped me look for some sources and gave me a couple that may help. Overall my experience was great and she was super helpful. This is not my first time using the library chat service offered, I would definitely recommend it to students having a hard time finding sources or just searching in general.

Narrative about my topic: Gun violence has been a big issue in the United States for a very long time; from mass shootings, homicide, suicide, and attempted murder. There are many propositions to help avoid these tragic situations, what I believe would help avoid gun violence would be a mandatory mental health evaluation by a professional for everyone attempting to purchase a firearm.

The counter-narrative: There should not be mental health evaluations conducted by experts to everyone who owns or wants to purchase a firearm. People may think this because mental states change and some people say it is discriminatory to people with mental health issues.

How this counter-narrative can help the problem I am writing about: This counter-narrative can help me in my writing because it helps me view the opposition and expand the solution for mental health evaluations. Build upon the solution to make sure it would keep up with the changes of individual's mental health and does not permanently ban them from owning a firearm.

The genre I choose for this assignment is a eulogy, the target audience would be friends and family of Karen Zandarski.

Hello, my name is Julieta. Most of you may not know me but I was a student of the beloved Professor Zandarski. I was her student for several English courses at CSU, and I got to know her very well in the three years as her student. Professor Zandarski was an intelligent, kind, and helpful person. All she wanted was to help her students succeed and always accommodated to our needs. She was not like most professors that just see teaching as a job and don't really care about students; she was so passionate about what she taught, she always treated everyone with respect and cared for our wellbeing inside and outside of the classroom. She was a genuinely good person with a heart of gold that only wanted the best for everyone. It is so incredibly hard to believe she is now gone. She was so kind to everyone inside and outside the classroom, I can't believe some monster would take her away from her friends, family, students, and the community. She shed a bright light everywhere she went and that awful monster who took her from us can never put out that light. I send my condolences to her friends and family, but I just want you all to know she left a mark on all her students and she was loved by many. She will be missed but never forgotten.
