How do the pro and anti ethnic studies arguments relate to conversations around the need for bilingual education versus English only?

The idea that these students are learning about their culture in the ethnic studies class could relate to students learning in their native language in Bilingual Education. People can argue against bilingual education with the idea that learning another language is "un-American"

These classes encourage knowledge of true past events and acknowledging true culture which is what is encouraged in bilingual education as well.

Bilingual education curriculum is centered around ideas that are meant to celebrate hispanic culture. I could see officials arguing on both sides because the curriculum is so racially charged.

The pro and anti ethnic studies can be related to bilingual education as they offer some of the same benefits. In bilingual classrooms, students are able to embrace both of their cultures (hopefully) while english only classrooms may confine them.

We need bilingual education in order to give our students a sense of belonging and community.

I think there is a lot of connection between these students learning about their own culture and race, and learning IN their own language and culture. These two ideas are closely connected, with the same amount of controversy, I believe. Teaching a student in a language other than English doesn't make them any less America. It helps them, just like the ethnic studies classes really helped those Arizonians.

These two ideas are very similar in the sense that Bilingual education could also be seen as "bias" to one culture to certain people. People may argue that they are trying to dismiss the American culture in bilingual classrooms.

In the same way people are going to argue and say that all students should be in monolingual classes because it is the "American" way instead of realizing that we must help all students and appreciate their language.
