Dick has what his prison psychiatrist suggests is an attachment disorder He can't experience any sense of emotional connection to another person or have concern for the effect of his actions on anyone else. This lets him do what he does without being particularly bothered by it.
He robs his friends. He claims to like his parents well enough, but that doesn't stop him from writing bad checks that they'll probably have to cover, or "borrowing" the shotgun that kills the Clutters from his parents' house. Oh, and in case you aren't convinced, his hobby is running down stray dogs with his truck whenever he gets the chance.

Together with Perry Smith, Hickock launched an invasion of the Clutter farmhouse, mistakenly believing that a large amount of money was kept in a safe.
Hickock is generally regarded as the more hardened criminal of the pair, a sociopath who took sadistic pleasure in killing dogs and harbored pedophilia desires for pre-pubescent girls.

Connection to Floyd Wells:

Floyd provides the tip that cracks the Clutter case when he tells prison authorities about his conversation with Dick about Floyd's former employer, Herb Clutter. We know little about him except that he's serving 3-5 years for theft and is described as "short and nearly chinless" Wells waits to tell the authorities what he knows about who committed the murders, because he wants to find out if he'll be punished by the other inmates if he snitches. But the promise of the $1000 reward plus parole finally motivates him to come forward. He insists that he always liked Mr. Clutter and had no intention of encouraging Dick to rob him.

Agent Nye, now hot on the trail of Perry and Dick, shows photos of the two to some shopkeepers in Kansas City. Several of them recognize Dick as the writer of the bad checks.

One of Dick's former employers remembers him as a likable guy and remembers his friend Perry.

Some neighbors of the Hickocks don't have such great memories of Dick, though. They think he'd "Steal the weights off a dead man's eyes".

Nye returns to interview the Hickocks in more depth. He learns that they could never stand Dick's friend Perry and wouldn't let him in the house.
